Sunday School Lesson: Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand – Trusting God With What You Have Matthew 14

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Matthew 14 includes the incredible miracle of Jesus feeding more than 5,000 people with just five loaves and two fish. This story shows us that God can take what little we have and use it to do amazing things when we trust Him with it.

1. Bible Reading: Matthew 14:13–21

“Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves… They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.”

Explanation For Teenagers

The disciples only saw what they lacked—but Jesus saw what was possible.

God often asks us to bring what we have—even if it feels small—and trust Him to multiply it.

Faith means believing that God can use our time, energy, and gifts to bless others.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think Jesus used the disciples to distribute the food?
  • Have you ever felt like what you had wasn’t enough for God to use?
  • What’s something “small” you could offer to God this week?

2. Bible Reading: Matthew 14:22–33

“Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid… Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt?'”

Explanation For Teenagers

Peter was bold enough to step out—but fear distracted him.

Jesus didn’t let him sink—He reached out in love and pulled him up.

Faith means stepping out even when we’re scared, and trusting Jesus to carry us.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What does stepping out of the boat look like in your life?
  • What “waves” tend to distract or scare you?
  • How has Jesus helped you when you’ve felt overwhelmed?
