Sunday School Lesson: Jesus Feeds the 5,000 – God Provides More Than Enough John 6:1–14

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Have you ever felt like you didn’t have enough? Enough time, energy, talent, or even food? This story reminds us that God takes what we bring—no matter how small—and turns it into more than enough.

Jesus feeding thousands with just a few loaves and fish shows us that nothing is too little in God’s hands.

1. Bible Reading: John 6:1–9

“A great crowd of people followed him… Jesus said to Philip, ‘Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?’ Philip answered, ‘It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread.’ Another of his disciples, Andrew, spoke up, ‘Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?'”

Explanation For Teenagers

The disciples were overwhelmed by the need, and their solution was based on what they didn’t have.

But one boy offered what little he had—and that was enough for Jesus to work with.

God can use your small offering in big ways when you’re willing to give it to Him.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think the boy offered his lunch?
  • What do you have that you could offer to God?
  • How can we trust God with the little things we bring to Him?

2. Bible Reading: John 6:10–14

“Jesus said, ‘Have the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down… Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. They all had enough to eat… They gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces… After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, ‘Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

Jesus didn’t just meet the need—He went beyond it. Everyone ate until they were full, and there were leftovers!

This shows us that God is not just enough—He is more than enough.

Trusting Jesus with what we have leads to blessings beyond what we expect.
