Sunday School Lesson: What to Do When You Feel Spiritually Dry – John 15:4-5

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters for Teens

April can feel weird spiritually. Easter season may be over, school gets busy, and the “motivated” feeling fades. A lot of teens quietly think, “I don’t feel close to God right now… am I doing something wrong?”

Feeling spiritually dry doesn’t mean you’re not a Christian. It means you’re human. The goal isn’t to chase a feeling—it’s to stay connected to Jesus. Tonight we’re learning how to remain in Christ when you’re tired, distracted, or discouraged, and how God brings life back to dry places.

What I’ve Learned About What to Do When You Feel Spiritually Dry

We have all felt disconnected at times. Life is hard and we can lose sight of what really matters. Sometimes it even feels like we are doing all we can but still cannot seem to “feel” God. This lesson gets into what to do in that situation. God is always waiting there for us and He never lacks anything.

Youth Group Game: “Stay Connected”

Goal: Show how connection affects strength and direction.

Supplies: None (optional: a rope).

How to Play (10 minutes):

  • Pick 2 volunteers to be “Distractions” and 1 volunteer to be the “Believer.”
  • The “Believer” must walk from one side of the room to the other while the “Distractions” try to gently block, distract, or redirect them (no rough contact).
  • Round 1: The “Believer” goes alone.
  • Round 2: The “Believer” goes again but this time they can link arms with a “Leader/Friend” volunteer who helps them stay on course.

Debrief (2 minutes): “Isolation makes spiritual drift easier. Staying connected to Jesus and His people helps you stay steady.”

Bible Reading 1: John 15:4-5 (Remain in Jesus)

“Remain in me… No branch can bear fruit by itself… apart from me you can do nothing.”

Explanation For Teenagers

  • Jesus is the source: fruit comes from connection, not effort alone.
  • Dryness often comes from drift: not always a big sin—just distance over time.
  • Remaining is daily: small habits keep you close even when you don’t feel spiritual.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What does it feel like to be “spiritually dry” as a teen?
  • What are common ways people drift from Jesus without noticing?
  • What’s one “remain” habit you could do daily?

Bible Reading 2: Psalm 42:1-2, 5 (Talk to God Honestly)

“My soul thirsts for God… Why, my soul, are you downcast?… Put your hope in God.”

Explanation For Teenagers

  • God can handle honesty: the Psalms show you can tell the truth about your feelings.
  • Spiritual thirst is not failure: thirst means you still want God.
  • Hope is a decision: the Psalmist speaks truth to his own soul.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why is it hard to be honest with God when you feel low?
  • What’s the difference between doubt and refusing God?
  • What would it look like to “talk to your soul” with truth this week?

Bible Reading 3: James 4:8 (Move Toward God)

“Come near to God and he will come near to you.”

Explanation For Teenagers

  • God isn’t playing hide-and-seek: He responds when you draw near.
  • Nearness is practiced: prayer, confession, Scripture, worship, community.
  • Sin affects closeness: not because God stops loving you, but because sin numbs your heart.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What keeps teens from drawing near to God (guilt, distractions, busyness, laziness)?
  • What’s one practical step you can take to draw near this week?
  • How does confession help restore closeness with God?

Bible Reading 4: Romans 10:17 (Faith Grows Through the Word)

“Faith comes from hearing… the message about Christ.”

Explanation For Teenagers

  • Faith has a fuel source: Scripture keeps faith alive.
  • Feelings follow focus: when you feed your mind truth, your heart catches up over time.
  • Small Bible habits work: you don’t need 2 hours a day to grow.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What usually fills your mind more than Scripture?
  • Why do teens wait to read the Bible until they “feel like it”?
  • What’s a realistic Bible plan you could actually stick to?

Bible Reading 5: Galatians 6:9 (Don’t Quit in the Dry Season)

“Let us not become weary in doing good… if we do not give up.”

Explanation For Teenagers

  • Dry seasons happen: but they’re not forever.
  • Quitting makes dryness deeper: consistency keeps the door open for renewal.
  • God grows things in hidden ways: you might not feel it, but He’s working.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What makes people quit spiritually when they feel dry?
  • What helps you keep going when motivation is gone?
  • How can your youth group support each other in dry seasons?

April Challenge: “5-Minute Remain Plan” (7 Days)

Do this once a day for one week:

  • 1 minute: Honest prayer (“Jesus, I feel ____. Help me.”)
  • 3 minutes: Read one chapter in John (or one Psalm).
  • 1 minute: One sentence: “Today I will remain by ____.”

Bonus: Tell a trusted leader/friend, “I’ve felt spiritually dry—can you pray for me this week?”

Closing Prayer

Jesus, we want to be close to You, even when we don’t feel it. Forgive us for drifting and for trying to live on our own strength. Teach us to remain in You and to come near with honest hearts. Give us hunger for Your Word, strength to stay consistent, and friends who help us keep going. Bring life back to dry places in us and restore our joy in You. In Your name, amen.
