Introduction: Why This Matters for Teens
When you’re a teenager, “the future” isn’t some far-off thing—it’s in your face all the time. What high school should I choose? What classes matter? What if I don’t know what I want to do? What if I disappoint people? What if I mess up my life?
God cares about your future more than you do. But God’s will isn’t mainly a secret map you have to guess correctly. Most of the time, God leads you through His Word, wise counsel, prayer, and daily obedience. Tonight we’re learning how to trust God with what’s next and walk forward without panic.
What I’ve Learned About God’s Will for My Future and Yours
Jeremiah 29:11 is one of the most popular verses among young people. We all want a purpose or a plan for our life. What is so amazing is that this is not just a motivational verse to make you feel better. God really does have a will for all of our lives and He will reveal this will to us if we trust Him and follow the next step. We may not get to see the whole plan all at once but God tells us to trust Him.
Youth Group Game: “Choose Your Next Step”
Goal: Show how God often guides us step-by-step, not all at once.
Supplies: Index cards, markers, tape.
Prep (5 minutes): Tape “path cards” on the floor like stepping stones. Each card has a choice written on it. Mix wise and unwise options.
Path card ideas:
- “Pray first”
- “Ask a wise adult”
- “Search Scripture”
- “Rush because I’m anxious”
- “Do what my friends say”
- “Hide it from God”
- “Make a plan + stay humble”
- “Ignore consequences”
How to Play (10–12 minutes):
- Pick a volunteer to “walk the path” from start to finish.
- The group votes which card they should step on next.
- If they step on an unwise card, pause and ask: “What could go wrong here?” Then choose a wiser step and continue.
Debrief (2 minutes): “God usually guides through the next right step, not the whole plan at once.”
Bible Reading 1: Jeremiah 29:11 (God Has Plans)
“For I know the plans I have for you… plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Explanation For Teenagers
- God is not guessing: He has plans—even when you feel uncertain.
- God’s plans include hope: your future isn’t doomed because you feel behind.
- Context matters: this was spoken to people in a hard season—God’s hope stands in hardship.
Youth Group Discussion Questions
- What makes teens anxious about the future?
- Why is it hard to believe God has good plans when life is hard?
- How does hope change the way you make decisions?
Bible Reading 2: Proverbs 3:5-6 (Trust Over Control)
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and he will make your paths straight.”
Explanation For Teenagers
- Trust means surrender: not pretending you’re not scared, but giving control to God.
- Lean not on your understanding: your feelings aren’t always reliable directions.
- God directs paths: especially when you acknowledge Him in your choices.
Youth Group Discussion Questions
- Where do you try to control everything the most?
- What does it look like to “acknowledge God” in a decision?
- Who is one wise person you could ask for advice?
Bible Reading 3: Matthew 6:33-34 (Don’t Borrow Tomorrow’s Stress)
“Seek first the kingdom of God… Therefore do not worry about tomorrow…”
Explanation For Teenagers
- God first: future clarity comes easier when Jesus is first.
- Worry steals today: it drags tomorrow’s pressure into today’s mind.
- God gives daily grace: you get what you need for today’s obedience.
Youth Group Discussion Questions
- What future fears are you “borrowing” right now?
- How does putting God first change your priorities?
- What is one thing you can do today instead of stressing about tomorrow?
Bible Reading 4: James 1:5 (Ask for Wisdom)
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God… and it will be given to you.”
Explanation For Teenagers
- God invites you to ask: you don’t have to pretend you know everything.
- Wisdom is practical: it helps you choose what’s right, not just what’s popular.
- God gives generously: He’s not stingy with guidance.
Youth Group Discussion Questions
- What decision do you need wisdom for right now?
- Why do teens ask everyone except God?
- What’s one way you can seek wisdom this week (prayer, Scripture, counsel)?
Bible Reading 5: Psalm 119:105 (Light for the Next Step)
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
Explanation For Teenagers
- A lamp shows steps, not the whole road: God often guides gradually.
- Scripture gives direction: it shapes choices, priorities, and character.
- When you don’t know the future: obey what you know is true now.
Youth Group Discussion Questions
- Why do we want God to show the whole plan at once?
- What “next step” might God be showing you right now?
- How can Bible reading help you make future decisions?
April Challenge: “One Wise Step”
This week, take one step that lines up with God’s wisdom:
- Write down one decision you’re worried about and pray about it daily for 7 days.
- Read Proverbs 3 every day this week and underline one phrase.
- Ask one trusted adult: “What do you think is a wise next step for me?”
- Make one small plan (study schedule, budget, boundary, habit) and commit it to God in prayer.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You that You know our future and that Your plans are good. Forgive us for worrying and trying to control what’s next. Help us trust You with our lives, seek You first, and ask You for wisdom. Guide our steps through Your Word, surround us with wise counsel, and give us peace to obey You today. We put our future in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, amen.
