Sunday School Lesson: Return to Me – God’s Call to Faithfulness Malachi 3

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

In Malachi 3, God invites His people to return to Him and promises to respond with blessing. He challenges them on their unfaithfulness, especially with tithes and offerings, but does so with a heart full of grace and desire for restoration. This chapter reminds us that coming back to God brings renewal, not rejection.

1. Bible Reading: Malachi 3:6–12

“‘Return to me, and I will return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty. But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’… ‘Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse… Test me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven.’”

Explanation For Teenagers

God’s not trying to take something from us—He’s trying to lead us into blessing and trust.

Returning to God means putting Him first—not just in money, but in priorities, trust, and obedience.

God’s promise to “open the floodgates” shows His desire to give abundantly when we put Him first.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think God uses the idea of a “return” instead of just a command?
  • What does trusting God with your resources look like in your life?
  • How can you test God’s faithfulness in a healthy, humble way?

2. Bible Reading: Malachi 3:16–18

“Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard… ‘They will be mine,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘in the day when I make up my treasured possession.’”

Explanation For Teenagers

God treasures those who honor Him—even if it feels like no one else notices.

Faithfulness is never wasted. God sees it, values it, and will reward it in His time.

We don’t have to be perfect, but we’re called to be real and faithful before God.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What does it mean that God “listens and hears” when we talk about Him?
  • Why is it encouraging to be called God’s “treasured possession”?
  • How can we encourage each other to stay faithful in everyday life?
