Sunday School Lesson: Preparing the Way – John the Baptist’s Mission Matthew 3

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Matthew 3 introduces us to John the Baptist, a bold prophet who calls people to turn back to God and prepare for Jesus. His message is direct, but full of urgency and purpose. This chapter reminds us that real faith involves repentance, humility, and readiness to follow Jesus.

1. Bible Reading: Matthew 3:1–6

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: ‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord.”'”

Explanation For Teenagers

John’s mission was to get people ready for Jesus—not just with words, but by changing their hearts.

Repentance means turning from sin and turning toward God—it’s a life shift.

God still calls us to prepare our hearts to follow Jesus with sincerity.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What does repentance mean to you personally?
  • Why do you think John chose to preach in the wilderness?
  • What’s one way you can prepare your heart for Jesus this week?

2. Bible Reading: Matthew 3:11–17

“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I… Then Jesus came… and was baptized by John. As soon as Jesus was baptized… a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

John knew his role was to point to Jesus, not take His place. That takes humility.

Jesus’ baptism shows His obedience and gives us an example to follow in our own walk with God.

God the Father affirmed Jesus’ identity—He affirms us when we follow Him too.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why was it important for Jesus to be baptized?
  • How can we be like John and point others to Jesus?
  • What does it mean to know that God is “well pleased” when we walk in obedience?

Youth Group Activity: “Wilderness Challenge”

What You’ll Need:

  • Paper, markers, and space to write or draw

How to Do It:

  1. Each student creates a “wilderness” card—something that gets in the way of their walk with Jesus.
  2. They write or draw how they can prepare their heart this week.
  3. Display or pray over them as a sign of preparing the way.

Debrief

  • What’s one thing God is asking you to clear out of your “wilderness”?
  • What can help you keep your focus on Jesus daily?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling us to prepare our hearts. Teach us to repent and turn to You fully. Help us point others to Jesus and walk in obedience, knowing You are pleased when we follow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
