Sunday School Lesson: Faithful Relationships – Honoring God in Community Malachi 2

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

In Malachi 2, God challenges the people to take their relationships seriously. He addresses broken trust, especially in spiritual leadership and marriage. God reminds His people that faithfulness matters—not just in rituals, but in how we treat each other.

1. Bible Reading: Malachi 2:1–9

“‘You have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble… But you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality in matters of the law.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

God called out the priests for being careless with their influence. They were supposed to lead people closer to God, but their behavior did the opposite.

Everyone has influence. Whether we know it or not, our words and actions affect others’ faith.

God wants us to live in a way that helps—not hurts—those around us spiritually.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What does it mean to be a good influence spiritually?
  • Why do you think God took the priests’ actions so seriously?
  • How can you use your influence to build others up in their faith?

2. Bible Reading: Malachi 2:13–16

“‘You flood the Lord’s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer looks with favor on your offerings… because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her… So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

God cares deeply about relationships. When we’re dishonest or hurtful in close relationships, it affects our connection with Him too.

Faithfulness is about being trustworthy, whether in friendships, dating, family, or church.

God wants our hearts—and that includes how we treat people close to us.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why does unfaithfulness in relationships matter to God?
  • What does being faithful look like in your friendships and community?
  • What’s one step you can take to strengthen trust in a relationship this week?
