Sunday School Lesson: God Speaks – The Lord’s Warning and Love Malachi 1

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Malachi 1 opens with a surprising truth: God loves His people—but they’ve stopped showing Him real honor. Instead of giving God their best, they offer leftovers. This chapter challenges us to check our hearts and remember that God deserves our love and respect.

1. Bible Reading: Malachi 1:2–5

“‘I have loved you,’ says the Lord. But you ask, ‘How have you loved us?’… ‘You will see it with your own eyes and say, “Great is the Lord—even beyond the borders of Israel!”’”

Explanation For Teenagers

Even when the people doubted it, God reminded them that He had always loved and protected them.

Sometimes we forget all God has done—but He’s never stopped loving us.

God’s love is the foundation of everything we do in response.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think the people questioned God’s love?
  • Have you ever had doubts or questions about God’s care for you?
  • How does remembering God’s love change your perspective?

2. Bible Reading: Malachi 1:6–14

“‘A son honors his father… If I am a master, where is the respect due me?’… ‘When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands?’”

Explanation For Teenagers

The people were going through the motions, but their worship had no heart.

God doesn’t want half-hearted offerings—He wants our best, not our leftovers.

Honoring God means giving Him the best of our time, energy, and love.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What does it look like to give God our best today?
  • What are some “leftovers” we sometimes offer God?
  • How can we show God that we take Him seriously?

Youth Group Activity: “Best or Leftover?”

What You’ll Need:

  • Index cards labeled with different scenarios (e.g., praying before bed, worshipping half-focused, giving time to serve, etc.)

How to Do It:

  1. Read a card aloud and decide as a group—is this giving God the best or giving leftovers?
  2. Discuss how to upgrade our worship and devotion to reflect God’s worth.

Debrief

  • Which area of your life could use more intentional focus for God?
  • How can we encourage each other to give God our best this week?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for loving us first. Help us to respond with honor, faithfulness, and wholehearted worship. Teach us to give You the best of our lives—because You are worthy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
