Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Jesus’ Power Over Evil

In Luke 9:37-43, Jesus performs another powerful miracle when He heals a boy who has been possessed by an evil spirit. The boy’s father brings him to Jesus after the disciples were unable to heal him. Jesus rebukes the evil spirit, and the boy is instantly healed. This passage highlights Jesus’ authority over evil and His compassion for those suffering. It also shows us the importance of faith and prayer in accessing God’s power in our lives. The miracle leaves the crowd in awe, showing that Jesus’ power is unmatched, and His mission to bring healing to the broken is clear.

For teenagers, this lesson challenges us to recognize that Jesus has authority over all things, even the forces of evil. Whether we face inner struggles, external challenges, or doubts, Jesus is the one we can turn to for healing, restoration, and deliverance. This lesson also encourages us to have faith in Jesus’ power and to rely on prayer to connect with God and receive His help.

Bible Reading 1: Luke 9:37-40

“The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. A man in the crowd called out, ‘Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsion so that he foams at the mouth; it scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • The father’s desperate plea: The father’s desperation shows how deeply the evil spirit was affecting his son’s life. The boy was suffering greatly, and his father was looking for any hope of healing. This teaches us that in moments of desperation and pain, we can turn to Jesus for help, just as this father did.
  • The failure of the disciples: The disciples were unable to heal the boy, despite their previous successes. This serves as a reminder that we, too, can feel powerless at times when facing challenges, but Jesus is always the one who can bring true healing. Sometimes, our lack of faith or reliance on our own strength can prevent us from experiencing the full power of God.
  • Jesus’ compassion for suffering: Jesus sees the suffering of the boy and his father, and He responds with compassion. This reminds us that Jesus cares about our struggles and is ready to step in and bring healing when we call on Him.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What do you think it felt like for the father to see his son suffering like that? How do you relate to that sense of desperation in your own life?
  • Why do you think the disciples couldn’t heal the boy? How can we rely on Jesus’ power when we feel powerless?
  • What does it mean to trust Jesus when we’re in situations that seem beyond our control?

Bible Reading 2: Luke 9:41-42

“You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion, but Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Jesus’ frustration with unbelief: Jesus expresses His frustration with the lack of faith in the crowd and His disciples. He calls them an “unbelieving and perverse generation.” This highlights the importance of having faith in God’s power. Sometimes, our doubts and lack of belief can limit what God wants to do in our lives. Jesus calls us to trust in His ability to work miracles, even when the situation seems impossible.
  • The demon’s final struggle: Even as the boy was brought to Jesus, the demon threw him into convulsions, showing how fiercely evil fights to hold on. But Jesus, with His authority, rebuked the demon and brought healing to the boy. This shows us that no matter how strong evil may seem, Jesus has ultimate power and can break any chains.
  • Jesus’ authority to heal: Jesus healed the boy and returned him to his father, restoring the family. This reminds us that Jesus’ power is not just about doing miracles—it’s about restoring people to wholeness and bringing peace to our lives.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why do you think Jesus expressed frustration with the lack of faith? How can we increase our faith in God’s power?
  • What does it mean for Jesus to have authority over evil? How does that affect how we approach struggles in our own lives?
  • What do you think it meant for the father to get his son back, healed and restored? How does that reflect the kind of healing Jesus offers us?

Bible Reading 3: Luke 9:43

“And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples,”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Marveling at God’s greatness: The crowd was amazed by the miracle of the boy’s healing. This shows us that Jesus’ actions reveal the greatness of God. When God works in our lives, others should be amazed by His power, and we should be in awe of His ability to heal, restore, and bring hope to even the darkest situations.
  • The importance of seeing God’s work: The crowd was marveling at Jesus’ power, but Jesus uses this moment to teach His disciples something deeper. Even when God does powerful things in our lives, we must not get distracted by the miracles alone; we must focus on His mission and purpose for us. Jesus always pointed beyond the miracle to the deeper truth about God’s Kingdom.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What does it mean to marvel at the greatness of God? How can we recognize God’s greatness in our own lives?
  • Why do you think the people were so amazed by Jesus’ healing power? How do miracles point us to God’s bigger plan?
  • How can we focus on the mission and purpose of God’s work in our lives, rather than getting distracted by the miracles themselves?

Youth Group Game: “Faith Over Fear”

Objective: To illustrate the importance of trusting in God’s power over fear and doubt.

Materials Needed: Blindfolds and a set of obstacles (e.g., chairs or cones) to create a path.

Instructions:

  1. Blindfold each participant and create an obstacle course they must navigate through.
  2. Pair up each participant with a “guide” who will give them verbal instructions to help them get through the course without running into obstacles.
  3. The game represents how, in life, we may face obstacles and challenges, but when we trust God (the guide), He will lead us safely through them.

Discussion After the Game:

  • How did it feel to trust someone else to guide you through the course? How does that relate to trusting God in our struggles?
  • What are some challenges you face in your life where you need to trust God more fully to guide you?
  • Why is it important to trust God, even when we can’t see the way forward?

Closing Prayer:

“Jesus, thank You for Your power and authority over all things, including evil and sickness. We know that no matter what struggles we face, You are greater than them all. Help us to trust You more fully, to seek Your healing, and to follow You with faith. May we always recognize Your greatness and share the good news of Your power and love with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
