Sunday School Lesson: Jesus Heals the Demon-Possessed Man – Luke 8:26-39

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Jesus’ Power Over Evil

In Luke 8:26-39, we read about a dramatic encounter where Jesus heals a man who has been possessed by demons. This man lived in torment, isolated from society and unable to find peace. Jesus, in His power and compassion, heals him and restores him to a life of dignity. This passage shows us that Jesus has authority over evil and can bring healing to even the most broken and hopeless situations.

For teenagers, it’s important to understand that Jesus’ power isn’t just about performing miracles in the past—it’s about His ongoing authority in our lives today. Whether it’s internal struggles, broken relationships, or fear, Jesus is able to bring healing and restoration. This lesson invites us to reflect on the areas of our lives where we need Jesus to bring His healing power and peace.

Bible Reading 1: Luke 8:26-27

“They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • The man’s torment: This man’s life was marked by isolation, torment, and pain. He lived in the tombs, away from society, because of his demon possession. This illustrates how sin and evil can separate us from others and leave us feeling disconnected and alone. The man’s life was broken, but Jesus was about to restore it.
  • The power of evil: The demon-possessed man represents how evil can control and destroy lives. However, the story shows us that no matter how strong the forces of evil seem, Jesus has the power to heal and restore. This teaches us that even when things feel hopeless, Jesus can bring light into dark situations.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What do you think it was like for the man to be isolated and tormented? How do you think he felt living in the tombs?
  • In what ways can sin or evil isolate us from others and from God?
  • How does Jesus’ ability to heal this man give you hope for areas of your life where you might feel broken or distant from God?

Bible Reading 2: Luke 8:28-30

“When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, ‘What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!’ For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • The confrontation with evil: When the man sees Jesus, he cries out and falls at His feet. This shows that even the demons recognize Jesus’ authority and power. Jesus’ presence brings freedom to the man, even though the evil spirits fight against Him. This reminds us that there is nothing more powerful than the authority of Jesus.
  • Jesus’ authority over evil: The demon-possessed man’s situation seemed hopeless—he had been bound by chains, but nothing could stop the demons. Yet when Jesus spoke, the evil forces had to obey. This teaches us that no matter how strong the evil in our lives may seem, Jesus has the authority to overcome it and bring healing.
  • Our need for Jesus’ intervention: The man couldn’t free himself from the demons; only Jesus could do that. In the same way, we often face struggles and battles that we cannot win on our own. We need Jesus to step into our lives and bring healing and freedom.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why do you think the demons recognized Jesus immediately? What does this show us about Jesus’ authority?
  • How does the man’s inability to free himself remind us of our need for Jesus in our struggles?
  • What are some “chains” in your life (like fears, bad habits, or doubts) that you need Jesus to break for you?

Bible Reading 3: Luke 8:31-33

“And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss. A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Jesus’ power over evil spirits: The demons begged Jesus to allow them to go into the pigs instead of being sent to the Abyss. Even though the demons have power, they are completely subject to Jesus’ authority. This illustrates how Jesus is in control of all spiritual forces and how His power can break the hold of evil on our lives.
  • Transformation through Jesus: When the demons left the man, the transformation was immediate and dramatic. This teaches us that when Jesus enters our lives, He doesn’t just make small changes—He brings complete transformation, freeing us from the chains of sin and evil.
  • New life in Christ: The man’s life was radically changed after his encounter with Jesus. This is a reminder that Jesus wants to transform us, to heal us, and to give us new life. The demons may have caused destruction, but Jesus brings restoration and peace.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why do you think the demons begged Jesus to send them into the pigs? What does this show us about the power Jesus has over evil?
  • How do you think the man felt after being freed from the demons? What does it teach us about the power of Jesus to transform lives?
  • What are some areas in your life where you need Jesus’ transformation and healing? How can you allow Him to work in those areas?

Bible Reading 4: Luke 8:34-39

“When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left. The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, ‘Return home and tell how much God has done for you.’ So the man went away and told all over the town how much Jesus had done for him.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • The man’s transformation: After being healed, the man is found sitting at Jesus’ feet, calm and restored. This shows the complete transformation that Jesus brings—where there was once chaos, there is now peace. This teaches us that when Jesus enters our lives, He brings true restoration and peace, no matter how broken or lost we may have felt.
  • Fear and rejection: The people were afraid of what had happened and asked Jesus to leave. Sometimes, when we experience something unfamiliar or challenging, we may respond with fear or rejection. But Jesus calls us to embrace the change He brings, even when it feels uncomfortable or uncertain.
  • Sharing the message of Jesus: Jesus tells the healed man to return home and share what God has done for him. Just as the man shared his story, we are called to share the work God has done in our lives with others. Our testimony of how Jesus has transformed us can be a powerful way to point others to Him.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why do you think the people were afraid of Jesus after seeing the man healed? How does that relate to how people sometimes react to change or the unknown?
  • What does it mean to be “in your right mind” after encountering Jesus? How does Jesus bring peace to our hearts and minds?
  • How can you share your story of how Jesus has changed your life with others? What might hold you back from doing that?

Youth Group Game: “Transformation Challenge”

Objective: To demonstrate how Jesus transforms lives and helps us share our testimony with others.

Materials Needed: Paper and markers to create “Before” and “After” signs, as well as props to represent change (optional).

Instructions:

  1. Ask each participant to think of a time when Jesus brought change or healing in their life. They can either write it down or draw pictures to show what their life was like “before” and “after” meeting Jesus.
  2. Encourage them to share their “before” and “after” stories with the group, explaining how Jesus transformed them.
  3. Discuss how sharing these testimonies can help others see God’s power at work in their lives and point them to Jesus.

Discussion After the Game:

  • How did it feel to share your story of transformation with others?
  • What are some ways you can share your story with people outside of the group?
  • Why is it important to share what Jesus has done in our lives with others?

Closing Prayer:

“Jesus, thank You for Your power to heal, transform, and restore us. We know that no matter how broken or lost we may feel, You have the power to bring peace and healing. Help us to embrace the transformation You bring and to share Your love and power with others. May our lives reflect Your grace and glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
