Introduction: True Greatness in the Kingdom of God

In Luke 7:24-30, Jesus speaks about the greatness of John the Baptist. He praises John for his role in preparing the way for the Messiah, but He also challenges the crowd to understand what true greatness looks like in God’s kingdom. Jesus reminds us that greatness in God’s eyes is not about wealth, power, or recognition—it’s about humility, faithfulness, and being obedient to God’s calling. As teenagers, it’s easy to get caught up in what the world considers greatness, like popularity or success. But Jesus teaches us that true greatness comes from following Him with a humble heart and a desire to serve others.

This passage invites us to reflect on our own lives and what we consider “great.” Are we pursuing the things that truly matter in God’s kingdom, or are we measuring our lives by worldly standards? This lesson challenges us to seek greatness in God’s eyes, not through fame or fortune, but through faithfulness to His will.

Bible Reading 1: Luke 7:24-25

“After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces.’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • John was not about outward appearances: Jesus asks the crowd what they expected to see in John. John wasn’t a man who sought fame or luxury. He didn’t live for wealth or status. He was focused on his mission to prepare the way for Jesus. This teaches us that true greatness is not about how we look or what we wear, but about our character and purpose in life.
  • The importance of inner character: John didn’t care about being admired for his clothes or lifestyle. He was dedicated to fulfilling God’s calling on his life. True greatness in God’s eyes comes from serving Him faithfully, not from seeking praise or recognition.
  • Don’t be swayed by worldly standards: The world often values outward appearances or material wealth. But Jesus shows us that real greatness doesn’t depend on those things. It’s about living out our faith with humility and obedience to God.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What do you think Jesus meant by asking about a reed swayed by the wind? How can we apply that to our lives today?
  • What are some ways that society measures greatness? How do those standards compare to what Jesus teaches about greatness?
  • What are some ways we can focus on inner character and living out our purpose rather than seeking outward success?

Bible Reading 2: Luke 7:26-27

“But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • John’s prophetic role: Jesus affirms John’s identity as a prophet, but He goes further—John was the messenger who prepared the way for Jesus. John’s role was incredibly important in God’s plan. This shows us that God has a purpose for each of us, just as He had a special purpose for John. Even when we might not see the immediate impact of our actions, God has a plan for how we fit into His kingdom.
  • Preparing the way for Jesus: John was called to point others toward Jesus, to prepare hearts for His coming. In our own lives, we are also called to prepare the way for Jesus by sharing His message and living in a way that reflects His love and truth.
  • God’s plan for us: John’s life wasn’t about his own fame or glory, but about fulfilling God’s plan. Similarly, we are called to live in obedience to God’s purpose, knowing that He is using us for His glory, even in ways we might not fully understand.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What does it mean to “prepare the way” for Jesus in your everyday life?
  • How can you live out God’s purpose for your life, even if it seems small or unnoticed by others?
  • In what ways can you point others toward Jesus, like John the Baptist did?

Bible Reading 3: Luke 7:28

“I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Jesus’ high praise for John: Jesus says that there is no one greater than John among those born of women. This shows us how important John’s role was in preparing the way for Jesus. However, Jesus adds something surprising: even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than John. This teaches us that in God’s kingdom, greatness is defined differently. It’s not about what we accomplish, but about being part of His kingdom.
  • The upside-down kingdom: Jesus often flips our understanding of greatness on its head. In the world, greatness is often measured by power, wealth, or influence. But in God’s kingdom, greatness is measured by our humility, obedience, and willingness to serve others.
  • The value of being in God’s kingdom: Jesus is saying that even the “least” in God’s kingdom is greater than the greatest figures of the world because they have the privilege of knowing and being part of His eternal kingdom. This invites us to consider how we value our relationship with God and the greatness of being part of His family.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What do you think Jesus meant by saying that even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than John the Baptist?
  • What are some examples of how the world measures greatness, and how does that compare to how Jesus defines greatness?
  • How can you live in a way that reflects the true greatness of being part of God’s kingdom?

Youth Group Game: “Kingdom of God Relay”

Objective: To demonstrate the idea of serving in God’s kingdom and living out greatness through humble service.

Materials Needed: Cones or markers for a relay course, small items (such as soft balls or bean bags) to “serve” to the next person in line.

Instructions:

  1. Set up a simple relay course with cones or markers.
  2. Each player must carry an item (representing service or greatness in God’s kingdom) through the course and pass it to the next person in line.
  3. The relay represents the idea that in God’s kingdom, we serve others in humble ways, which is what makes us great in His eyes.
  4. After the game, discuss how serving others is part of living in God’s kingdom and reflecting true greatness.

Discussion After the Game:

  • How does this relay illustrate what it means to live out greatness in God’s kingdom?
  • What are some ways you can serve others humbly in your life?
  • Why is serving others so important in reflecting the values of God’s kingdom?

Closing Prayer:

“Jesus, thank You for teaching us about true greatness. Help us to live with humility, serving others and reflecting Your love in everything we do. May we always seek greatness in Your kingdom and follow the example of John the Baptist, who faithfully prepared the way for You. In Your name, Amen.”

This lesson encourages us to rethink what greatness means in God’s eyes. Jesus teaches us that true greatness is not about fame, wealth, or status, but about living humbly, serving others, and faithfully following God’s purpose for our lives.
