Sunday School Lesson: Jesus Raises Lazarus – Power Over Death John 11:1–44

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Sometimes we wonder if God really shows up when we’re hurting. The story of Lazarus reminds us that Jesus not only understands our pain—He has power over it. He cried with His friends, but He also called a dead man out of the grave.

This lesson shows that Jesus brings hope, even when things seem beyond fixing.

1. Bible Reading: John 11:1–6

“Now a man named Lazarus was sick… So the sisters sent word to Jesus, ‘Lord, the one you love is sick.’ When he heard this, Jesus said, ‘This sickness will not end in death… it is for God’s glory.’ Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Jesus didn’t rush to heal Lazarus—He waited. That must have been confusing to his friends.

But Jesus had a bigger plan that they couldn’t see yet.

Sometimes God’s timing feels off, but He’s always working for something greater.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think Jesus waited to go see Lazarus?
  • Have you ever prayed for something and felt like God didn’t show up right away?
  • What does this story teach us about trusting God’s timing?

2. Bible Reading: John 11:32–44

“When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ When Jesus saw her weeping… he was deeply moved… Jesus wept. Then Jesus called in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Jesus didn’t just perform a miracle—He felt the pain of the moment. He cried.

But He also showed that death doesn’t have the final word when He’s involved.

This story shows us both the compassion and the power of Jesus.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think Jesus wept even though He knew He would raise Lazarus?
  • What does this tell you about how Jesus relates to our struggles?
  • How does this story strengthen your faith in what Jesus can do?

Youth Group Game: “Grave Clothes Relay”

What You’ll Need:

  • Toilet paper rolls or strips of cloth
  • Room for teams to race

How to Play:

  1. Split students into teams. One person is “Lazarus” and gets wrapped in toilet paper.
  2. The others must unwrap them quickly and safely—just like Lazarus being set free.
  3. Talk about how Jesus sets us free from things that hold us back.

Debrief

  • What was it like to be wrapped up or set free?
  • What are some things that hold people back today?
  • What does it look like for Jesus to bring freedom in your life?

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for being with us in our pain and for having the power to bring new life. Help us trust You, even when the answer doesn’t come right away. Remind us that You are never late and that You always bring hope. In Your name, Amen.
