Sunday School Lesson: The Feeding of the 5,000 – Trusting God to Provide John 6:1-14

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Have you ever felt like you didn’t have enough—enough strength, enough patience, or enough resources? The story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 reminds us that no matter how little we have, God can provide abundantly.

Today, we’ll learn how Jesus took a small lunch and turned it into a miracle, showing that God always provides what we need.

1. Bible Reading: John 6:1-14

“When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, ‘Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?’ He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. Philip answered him, ‘It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!’ Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, ‘Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?’ Jesus said, ‘Have the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.”

Explanation For Teenagers

The disciples saw a problem—too many people and not enough food. But Jesus saw an opportunity for faith.

God doesn’t ask us to have all the answers; He asks us to trust Him with what we have.

When we give God even the little we have, He can multiply it beyond what we imagine.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think Jesus asked Philip where they should buy bread, even though He already knew what He would do?
  • Have you ever felt like you didn’t have enough (resources, strength, patience, etc.)? What happened?
  • What does this story teach us about trusting God to provide?

2. Bible Reading: Philippians 4:19

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

Explanation For Teenagers

God promises to meet our needs—not always in the way we expect, but always in the way that’s best for us.

Faith means trusting that even when we feel like we don’t have enough, God is still working.

When we focus on what we lack, we miss out on seeing what God can do. When we trust Him, we see miracles happen.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • How does this verse encourage you when you’re worried about not having enough?
  • What are some ways God has provided for you in the past?
  • How can we learn to trust God more with what we have?

Youth Group Game: “Multiplication Challenge”

What You’ll Need:

  • A bag of small objects (beans, marbles, coins, etc.)
  • Small cups

How to Play:

  1. Give each team a small number of objects (representing the loaves and fish).
  2. Teams must find creative ways to “multiply” them (trade with others, share, work together).
  3. After the game, discuss how God can multiply what we have when we trust Him.

Debrief

  • How did it feel to start with so little in the game?
  • What can this activity teach us about trusting God with what we have?
  • What’s one way you can trust God more this week?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for showing us that You are always our provider. Help us to trust You even when we feel like we don’t have enough. Teach us to have faith in Your power to multiply what we give You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
