Sunday School Lesson: God’s Power Over Darkness – The Ninth Plague Exodus 10

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

In Exodus 10, God sends two of the most memorable plagues—locusts and darkness—to show Pharaoh and all of Egypt that He is the one true God. While scary and dramatic, these moments also teach us something powerful: God is in control, even over nature, and He uses even the dark moments for His purposes.

This lesson shows us how we can trust God when life feels dark and how He calls us to live in the light of His truth.

1. Bible Reading: Exodus 10:12–20

“And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Stretch out your hand over Egypt so that locusts swarm over the land… They devoured all that was left after the hail… nothing green remained on tree or plant… But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go.”

Explanation For Teenagers

The locusts stripped Egypt bare, showing how temporary earthly things can be when God moves.

Pharaoh still refused to change, even though he was watching his world fall apart.

God gives us warnings not to crush us, but to call us to trust and obey Him.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What stands out to you about the plague of locusts?
  • Why do you think Pharaoh kept resisting God?
  • What happens when we ignore God’s direction in our own lives?

2. Bible Reading: Exodus 10:21–29

“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness spreads over Egypt—darkness that can be felt.’ So Moses stretched out his hand… and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days. No one could see anyone else or move… Yet all the Israelites had light where they lived.”

Explanation For Teenagers

The darkness wasn’t just physical—it represented spiritual blindness and stubborn hearts.

But God gave light to His people. Even in the darkest times, His light still shines.

Choosing to follow God brings clarity, while resisting Him leads to deeper confusion and fear.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What do you think it means that the darkness “could be felt”?
  • Why is it significant that the Israelites still had light?
  • How can we be a light in dark places at school or online?

Youth Group Game: “Light vs. Darkness”

What You’ll Need:

  • Blindfolds
  • Flashlights
  • Hidden objects or clues

How to Play:

  1. Divide into teams. One blindfolded member must find a hidden object with the help of teammates giving verbal directions.
  2. Once they find the object, they pass the flashlight to the next player.
  3. Debrief about what it’s like to trust guidance in darkness and how God gives us light through His Word and people.

Debrief

  • Was it hard to find your way in the dark?
  • What helped you stay focused?
  • What’s one way you can reflect God’s light this week?

Closing Prayer

God, thank You that You are stronger than the darkness. Help us trust Your power and live in Your light. When we feel overwhelmed or unsure, remind us that You are with us and guiding us. Make us a light for others who are searching for hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
