Sunday School Lesson: The Burning Bush – When God Calls Us Exodus 3:1-12

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Have you ever felt unqualified for something? Maybe you’ve been asked to lead a project, speak in front of people, or do something outside of your comfort zone. That’s exactly how Moses felt when God called him from a burning bush.

Today’s lesson will show us that when God calls us to do something, He also equips us to carry it out.

1. Bible Reading: Exodus 3:1-6

“Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, ‘I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.’ When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, ‘Moses! Moses!’ And Moses said, ‘Here I am.’”

Explanation For Teenagers

Moses wasn’t looking for a big mission—he was just taking care of sheep when God called him.

The burning bush was something supernatural—it grabbed Moses’ attention, just like God sometimes gets our attention in unexpected ways.

God calls ordinary people to do extraordinary things, and He often meets us where we least expect it.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think God chose to speak to Moses through a burning bush?
  • Has there ever been a time when you felt like God was calling you to something, but you felt unsure?
  • What are some ways God gets our attention today?

2. Bible Reading: Exodus 3:10-12

“So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt. But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?’ And God said, ‘I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.’”

Explanation For Teenagers

Moses immediately doubted himself, but God wasn’t asking Moses to rely on his own abilities—God promised to be with him.

We often feel unqualified, but God equips those He calls.

God’s presence is more important than our skill level—He is the one who makes the mission possible.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think Moses was afraid to accept God’s call?
  • Have you ever felt like you weren’t good enough for something? How did you respond?
  • How does knowing that God is with us change the way we approach challenges?

Youth Group Game: “Follow the Call”

What You’ll Need:

  • Blindfolds
  • A clear space for movement

How to Play:

  1. Choose one person to be the “caller” and another to be blindfolded.
  2. The caller must guide the blindfolded person through a simple obstacle course using only their voice.
  3. Discuss how listening to God’s call is sometimes like following a voice in uncertainty.

Debrief

  • How hard was it to trust the voice guiding you?
  • How does this activity relate to trusting God’s direction?
  • What’s one way you can listen for God’s voice this week?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for showing us through Moses’ story that You call us for a purpose. Help us to trust You even when we feel unqualified. Give us courage to say “yes” to what You have planned for us, knowing that You will be with us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
