Sunday School Lesson: God Sees and Saves – The Birth of Moses Exodus 2

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Exodus 2 shows us that even when things seem dangerous, unfair, or out of control, God is working behind the scenes. The birth of Moses happens in a time of oppression—but God protects him and sets the stage for His rescue plan. This lesson reminds teens that God sees, cares, and prepares a way.

1. Bible Reading: Exodus 2:1–10

“Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son… When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months… Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank… She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it… She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Moses’ mother took a big risk to protect her baby, trusting that God would take care of him.

God worked through a surprising person—Pharaoh’s daughter—to rescue Moses and raise him in the palace.

This shows us that God can use anyone, even unexpected people and places, to carry out His plan.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What does this story show us about God’s protection?
  • Why do you think Pharaoh’s daughter chose to rescue Moses?
  • Have you ever experienced God helping you in an unexpected way?

2. Bible Reading: Exodus 2:11–25

“One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor… He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew… Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian… When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled… During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery… and their cry for help went up to God. God heard their groaning and remembered his covenant.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Moses’ story gets messy fast—he kills someone, runs away, and ends up in the desert.

But even in the mess, God is preparing him for a bigger purpose.

God hears our cries, sees our struggles, and has not forgotten us—just like He didn’t forget His people in Egypt.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think Moses reacted the way he did?
  • What does this part of the story show us about God’s timing?
  • How can we hold on to faith when it feels like God is taking too long?

Youth Group Game: “Rescue Relay”

What You’ll Need:

  • Blankets, baskets, or large boxes
  • Obstacle course space

How to Play:

  1. Divide into teams. One team member is “baby Moses” and sits in the basket/blanket.
  2. The rest must work together to carefully carry or guide the basket through the course without tipping or dropping it.
  3. Debrief about how God’s rescue sometimes requires teamwork and trust.

Debrief

  • What was challenging about protecting the person in the basket?
  • How does this relate to how God protects us?
  • What does it mean to trust God with your life’s direction?

Closing Prayer

God, thank You for seeing us, hearing our cries, and never forgetting Your promises. Help us trust You when life is scary or confusing. Just like You protected and prepared Moses, prepare us for Your purpose and use us for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
