Sunday School Lesson: Radical Generosity – Living Open-Handed Deuteronomy 15

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Deuteronomy 15 teaches a mindset that’s radically different from the world around us: generosity. In a culture that often says “hold on tightly,” God tells His people to live with open hands—canceling debts, caring for the poor, and trusting Him as the provider.

This lesson helps teens see that generosity isn’t just about money—it’s about heart, compassion, and trusting God more than our stuff.

1. Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 15:7–11

“If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites… do not be hardhearted or tightfisted… Rather, be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need… Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart… because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work.”

Explanation For Teenagers

God’s people are called to live differently—to care deeply and give freely.

Generosity shows the world what God’s love looks like in action.

It’s not about having a lot—it’s about trusting God with what you have and choosing to bless others.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think God commands us to be generous?
  • What’s the difference between giving reluctantly and giving freely?
  • Can you think of a time someone was generous to you? How did it feel?

2. Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 15:12–15

“If any of your people—Hebrew men or women—sell themselves to you and serve you six years, in the seventh year you must let them go free… And when you release them, do not send them away empty-handed. Supply them liberally… Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you.”

Explanation For Teenagers

God built a system that protected people from long-term poverty and exploitation.

He reminded His people of where they came from—and how they should treat others with that same mercy and dignity.

When we remember God’s mercy in our lives, it becomes easier to extend mercy to others.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What stands out to you in how God tells people to treat others?
  • How can remembering your own blessings help you be more generous?
  • What’s one way you can live more “open-handed” this week?

Youth Group Game: “Open Hands Relay”

What You’ll Need:

  • Small items (candy, coins, or ping-pong balls)
  • Cups or buckets at the finish line

How to Play:

  1. Each team must pass items down the line using only open hands—no gripping allowed.
  2. First team to get all their items into the bucket wins.
  3. Debrief about how generosity requires trust, balance, and teamwork.

Debrief

  • Was it hard to carry things with open hands?
  • How does this reflect the challenge of being generous?
  • What did you learn about teamwork and trust?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for being so generous with us. Help us to be openhanded, kind, and giving in how we live. Teach us to trust You with our resources and to love others well, just like You love us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
