Introduction: Why This Matters
Judges 17 begins the final section of the book of Judges, where “everyone did what was right in their own eyes.” Micah’s story is about creating a religion that looks spiritual but ignores God’s instructions. This lesson helps teens think about what real worship is and why following God’s truth matters.
1. Bible Reading: Judges 17:1–6
“Now a man named Micah… said to his mother, ‘The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken… I took it.’… Then he returned the silver… and she said, ‘I solemnly consecrate my silver to the Lord for my son to make an image.’… Micah made a shrine, and he installed one of his sons as his priest… In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.”
Explanation For Teenagers
Micah thought he was honoring God—but he did it his own way, not God’s way.
He mixed truth with error, creating something that looked religious but was rooted in disobedience.
True worship means following God’s voice, not just doing what feels spiritual.
Youth Group Discussion Questions
- What do you think Micah got wrong in this story?
- Why is it tempting to do what “feels right” instead of what God says?
- What’s one way we can keep our faith grounded in truth?
2. Bible Reading: Judges 17:7–13
“A young Levite… came to Micah’s house… Micah said, ‘Live with me and be my father and priest… I know that the Lord will be good to me, since this Levite has become my priest.'”
Explanation For Teenagers
Micah hired a Levite to make his shrine seem more legit—but his motives were selfish.
He was more focused on getting blessings than honoring God in obedience.
God isn’t fooled by appearances—He wants hearts that seek Him with truth and humility.
Youth Group Discussion Questions
- Why did Micah want the Levite to stay with him?
- Have you ever tried to “look spiritual” without really following God’s way?
- How can we focus more on God’s truth and less on impressing others?
Youth Group Game: “Truth or Trap?”
What You’ll Need:
- Cards with statements (some biblical, some slightly twisted)
How to Play:
- Read each card aloud and have students decide if it’s biblical truth or a “trap” (false teaching).
- Discuss each one—why it’s true or where it goes wrong.
Debrief
- What made some statements tricky?
- Why is it important to know Scripture for yourself?
- How can we spot false teaching in real life?
Closing Prayer
