Sunday School Lesson: Peace Over Pride – Jephthah and the Ephraimites Judges 12

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Judges 12 tells the story of conflict between Jephthah and the Ephraimites. After winning a major battle, instead of celebrating unity, jealousy and pride caused more fighting. This lesson shows how pride can divide us and why peace, humility, and wise words matter.

1. Bible Reading: Judges 12:1–6

“The Ephraimites asked Jephthah, ‘Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you?’… Jephthah answered, ‘I called, but you didn’t help.’ Then Jephthah fought the Ephraimites, and the Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan… When someone said, ‘Let me cross over,’ the Gileadites tested them with a word, and if they couldn’t pronounce it right, they were killed.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Jealousy caused a fight between people who should’ve been on the same side.

Pride and poor communication escalated a disagreement into a battle.

God calls us to be peacemakers—not just warriors. Our words and attitudes can either bring unity or division.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think the Ephraimites were angry after the battle was already won?
  • What could Jephthah have done differently to keep peace?
  • How can you respond with humility when you feel left out or offended?

2. Bible Reading: Judges 12:7–15 (Summary)

Jephthah led Israel for six years, then other leaders followed. The chapter ends with a record of short leadership terms—showing a time of constant change.

Explanation For Teenagers

The instability during this time shows the need for wise and humble leadership.

God wants us to be people who build peace and serve with humility—not people driven by jealousy or ego.

We can make a difference by being steady, respectful, and peacemaking voices among our peers.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What does this story teach about handling conflict?
  • What’s a way you can build peace instead of drama in your group or school?

Lord, help us to be people who choose peace over pride. Teach us to listen, forgive, and speak with humility. Show us how to lead and live in ways that bring people together and point to Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
