Sunday School Lesson: Built on the Rock – Listening and Obeying Jesus Matthew 7

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Matthew 7 closes the Sermon on the Mount with a clear challenge: don’t just hear God’s Word—live it out. Jesus compares those who obey Him to wise builders who build on rock. This chapter reminds us that following Jesus means building a strong, lasting life on His truth.

1. Bible Reading: Matthew 7:24–27

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock… But everyone who hears these words and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Jesus isn’t just interested in what we say—we show our faith by how we live.

Storms come in life, but when we build on Jesus’ truth, we can stand strong.

Following Jesus daily means making wise choices and putting His teaching into action.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What does it mean to build your life on Jesus?
  • How do you know if your foundation is strong?
  • What’s one way you can practice what Jesus taught this week?

2. Bible Reading: Matthew 7:15–20

“By their fruit you will recognize them… Every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Fruit is what your life produces—your words, actions, and attitudes.

Jesus says you can tell what’s really in someone’s heart by what they consistently do.

When we stay connected to Him, our lives show love, truth, and kindness.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What kind of “fruit” do you want your life to grow?
  • What’s something that can keep your heart healthy and close to Jesus?
  • Who’s someone in your life whose fruit really shows their faith?

Youth Group Activity: “Rock or Sand?”

What You’ll Need:

  • Two clear containers, rocks, sand, water, small house figures (optional)

How to Do It:

  1. Use one container to build a “rock” base, the other on sand. Pour water on both and observe which stands.
  2. Discuss how life’s “storms” test our foundation—and how Jesus helps us stand.

Debrief

  • What helps you stay grounded in tough times?
  • How can this story encourage you to take Jesus’ words seriously?

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for being our solid foundation. Help us not only to hear Your Word, but to live it. Strengthen us through every storm, and help us bear fruit that reflects Your love. In Your name, Amen.
