Print Friendly and PDF

Today we’re exploring something that can deeply impact our daily lives and interactions: the Fruit of the Spirit. As teenagers, you’re forming habits, making choices, and developing character that will shape your future. Understanding and living out the Fruit of the Spirit can help you make decisions that reflect God’s love and grace, and make a positive difference in your relationships and community.

The Fruit of the Spirit isn’t just a list of traits to strive for; it’s about allowing God’s Spirit to work in us so these qualities naturally flow out of our lives. Let’s dive into what this means and how it can transform us from the inside out.

Bible Passage: Galatians 5:22-23

Bible Reading

Let’s read Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV):

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

Explanation For Teenagers

  • Love: This isn’t just about romantic love; it’s about selfless, unconditional love for others. It’s the kind of love that puts others’ needs first.
  • Joy: Joy isn’t just about being happy when things are going well; it’s a deep, abiding sense of gladness that comes from knowing and trusting God.
  • Peace: This means having a calm and content heart, even when life is chaotic. It’s about feeling settled and secure because of your relationship with God.
  • Forbearance: Also known as patience, this is the ability to endure difficult situations or people without getting frustrated.
  • Kindness: Being considerate and generous to others, not because you want something in return, but because it’s the right thing to do.
  • Goodness: This involves a moral integrity and the desire to do what is right, both in actions and thoughts.
  • Faithfulness: Staying loyal and trustworthy, keeping your promises, and being consistent in your relationship with God and others.
  • Gentleness: This means showing humility and care, not being harsh or abrasive.
  • Self-Control: The ability to manage your desires and impulses, making choices that align with God’s will rather than your own urges.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  1. Which aspect of the Fruit of the Spirit do you find most challenging to live out, and why?
  2. How can the Fruit of the Spirit influence your relationships with friends, family, and people at school?
  3. Can you think of a recent situation where practicing one of these traits would have made a difference? How?

Bible Passage: John 15:5

Bible Reading

Let’s also look at John 15:5 (NIV):

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

Explanation For Teenagers

  • I Am the Vine: Jesus is the source of life and strength. Just as branches rely on the vine for nourishment, we depend on Jesus for spiritual vitality.
  • You Are the Branches: We are the ones who bear fruit, reflecting the qualities of the Spirit as we stay connected to Jesus.
  • Remain in Me: This means maintaining a close relationship with Jesus through prayer, reading the Bible, and living according to His teachings.
  • Bear Much Fruit: When we stay connected to Jesus, our lives will naturally reflect the Fruit of the Spirit. It’s not about trying harder but staying close to Him.
  • Apart from Me You Can Do Nothing: Without Jesus, we can’t produce true fruit. It’s His work in us that makes these qualities grow.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  1. How can staying connected to Jesus help you develop and show the Fruit of the Spirit in your life?
  2. What are some practical ways you can “remain in Jesus” throughout your daily routine?
  3. How does knowing that you can’t bear fruit on your own affect your approach to living out these traits?

Youth Group Game: Fruit of the Spirit Relay

Objective

This game will help you remember and think about the different aspects of the Fruit of the Spirit while having fun and being active.

How to Play

  1. Preparation: Create a relay course with different stations. At each station, place a card with one of the Fruit of the Spirit traits and a challenge related to that trait (e.g., act out a kind deed, answer a question about peace, etc.).
  2. Activity: Divide into teams. Each team must complete the challenges at each station, which should be set up around the room or outside.
  3. Finish: The first team to complete all the stations wins. Afterward, gather to discuss how each trait was represented in the challenges and how it can be applied in real life.

Closing Prayer

Let’s close our time together with a prayer.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Spirit and the Fruit that You want to grow in us. Help us to stay connected to Jesus and allow the Fruit of the Spirit to be evident in our lives. Teach us to live out these qualities every day and in every situation. Guide us to be a reflection of Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Thanks for being here today! Remember, living out the Fruit of the Spirit is about staying close to Jesus and letting His love and power work through you. Keep reflecting on these traits and how they can transform your life. See you next week!
