Youth Ministry Lesson on Jeremiah 33:14-16: Hope You Can Count On

Print Friendly and PDF

Hey friends! Have you ever made a promise? Maybe you told someone you’d show up for them or promised to keep a secret. Do you remember how it felt when someone broke a promise they made to you? Not so great, right?

We live in a world where promises sometimes get broken, but God’s promises are different. He’s the ultimate Promise Keeper, and today, we’re talking about one of His most amazing promises from Jeremiah 33. It’s a promise of hope, restoration, and a Savior—Jesus!

For teenagers like you, life can feel uncertain. Maybe you’re wondering about your future or stressing over what’s happening in the world around you. This passage reminds us that God’s promises hold firm, no matter what. He gave His people a promise long ago that changed everything—and this promise is for you too!

Alright, grab your Bibles, and let’s see how we can find hope you can count on!

📖 Bible Reading #1 – Jeremiah 33:14

“‘The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will fulfill the good promise I made to the people of Israel and Judah.’”

🔍 Explanation

  • Timing Is Everything: When God says, “The days are coming,” He’s pointing to a future event. This promise wasn’t instant—it required patience and trust.
  • A Covenant-Keeping God: God had made a covenant (an unbreakable promise) with His people, and He’s reminding them that He hasn’t forgotten.
  • Good Promise: Notice He says, “good promise.” God’s plans are always good—even when life feels hard. His promises are filled with hope, love, and peace.

🤔 Discussion Questions

  1. What are some promises God has made to us in the Bible?
  2. Why is it sometimes hard to trust God’s timing? Have you felt that way before?
  3. How can this verse encourage you when life feels uncertain?

📖 Bible Reading #2 – Jeremiah 33:15

“‘In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land.’”

🔍 Explanation

  • The Righteous Branch: This is a prophecy about Jesus! God promised that a descendant of King David would bring justice and righteousness to the world.
  • A King Like No Other: Jesus is the King who is perfectly just and good—something the world desperately needed (and still needs).
  • Hope for a Savior: This part reminds us that Jesus didn’t just show up randomly—He was part of God’s plan all along.

🤔 Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think God uses the image of a “Branch” in this verse? What does it tell us about Jesus?
  2. How does knowing Jesus was part of God’s plan from the beginning strengthen your faith?
  3. What does it mean for Jesus to be just and righteous? How can we reflect that in our own lives?

📖 Bible Reading #3 – Jeremiah 33:16

“‘In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. This is the name by which it will be called: The Lord Our Righteous Savior.’”

🔍 Explanation

  • Salvation for All: Jesus’ coming wasn’t just about Israel or Judah. His salvation is for everyone!
  • A Safe Place: God promises safety and security, which we can find in Him. Even when the world feels chaotic, we can have peace knowing He’s in control.
  • A Powerful Name: “The Lord Our Righteous Savior” shows us that Jesus isn’t just a good teacher or leader—He’s our Savior and the source of righteousness we need.

🤔 Discussion Questions

  1. What does it mean to call Jesus “The Lord Our Righteous Savior”?
  2. Have you experienced peace in Jesus, even during tough times? If so, how?
  3. How can this verse inspire us to share the hope of Jesus with others?

🎉 Youth Group Game – “Promise Pass”

Objective:

This game will get everyone thinking about promises and their importance while having fun!

How to Play:

  1. Have your group sit in a big circle.
  2. Take a small object (a ball, beanbag, or anything you can pass around).
  3. While passing the object around the circle, each person has to say one of God’s promises from the Bible (examples include “I will never leave you” or “I give you eternal life”).
  4. If someone hesitates for more than 5 seconds or repeats a promise already said, they’re out.
  5. The last person standing wins!

Debrief After the Game

  • How did it feel to think about all of God’s promises?
  • Were there more promises than you realized?
  • How can remembering God’s promises help you in everyday life?

🛠️ Reflect and Apply

  • Spend this week focusing on one promise of God that speaks to where you are right now. Write it down and keep it somewhere you’ll see it often (like on your phone or mirror).
  • Think of someone you know who might need encouragement. Share one of God’s promises with them this week.
  • Turn this passage into a prayer, thanking God for being a promise-keeper and for sending Jesus as our Savior.

🙏 Closing Prayer

“Lord, thank You for being a God who keeps His promises. Thank You for sending Jesus to be our Righteous Savior and for the hope that gives us, no matter what life looks like. Help us trust Your timing and rely on Your Word when we’re unsure of what’s ahead. Show us how to live in a way that reflects Your justice and righteousness. We love You, and we’re so grateful for the unshakable hope we have in You. Amen.”

God is a promise-keeper. Just like He fulfilled His promise to send Jesus, He’ll continue to fulfill every promise He’s made to you. Trust Him, even when the way forward feels unclear, and remember—you’re never on this journey alone!
