Sunday School Lesson: The Transfiguration – Seeing Jesus Clearly Matthew 17

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Matthew 17 gives us a powerful glimpse of Jesus’ glory through the Transfiguration. In this moment, His divine nature is revealed to Peter, James, and John. This story helps us remember who Jesus really is and how important it is to listen to Him.

1. Bible Reading: Matthew 17:1–8

“While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!'”

Explanation For Teenagers

The disciples had seen Jesus do miracles—but now they saw a glimpse of His true heavenly power.

God the Father tells them to focus on one thing: listen to Jesus.

In a noisy world, tuning in to Jesus’ voice can change everything.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think Jesus only brought three disciples to witness the Transfiguration?
  • What might “listening to Jesus” look like in your everyday life?
  • What’s something Jesus has been teaching or showing you lately?

2. Bible Reading: Matthew 17:14–20

“He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed… nothing will be impossible for you.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

Faith doesn’t have to be huge to be powerful. It just needs to be real.

Jesus wants us to bring our doubts, struggles, and even tiny trust to Him—He can work with that.

God does big things through small beginnings.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What is something small in your life you can offer in faith?
  • Why do you think Jesus compared faith to a mustard seed?
  • How has your faith grown this year, even in little ways?

Youth Group Activity: “Mustard Seed Challenge”

What You’ll Need:

  • Mustard seeds (or small beads), envelopes, pens

How to Do It:

  1. Each student receives a seed and writes one thing they’re believing God for on the envelope.
  2. Keep them as reminders that small faith can lead to great things.

Debrief

  • How can you practice small, consistent faith in daily life?
  • What’s one way you want to “listen to Him” this week?

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for showing us Your glory and inviting us to follow You with even the smallest faith. Help us listen to Your voice above all others and trust You more each day. In Your name, Amen.
