Introduction: Listening to God’s Messengers

In Luke 7:31-35, Jesus addresses the rejection of God’s messengers by the current generation. He compares the people of His time to children who refuse to play and listen. No matter what the message is, they reject it. Jesus uses this illustration to show that people often reject the message of truth, whether it comes with joy or with seriousness. In this passage, we see the challenge of hearing and responding to God’s Word.

For teenagers, it can be easy to ignore or reject advice, especially when it’s hard to hear or challenges the way we live. But God’s messengers—whether through the Bible, pastors, or even friends—are speaking truth to help guide us into a better relationship with Him. This lesson invites us to examine how we respond to God’s messengers and whether we are listening to His guidance in our lives.

Bible Reading 1: Luke 7:31-32

“To what then can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: ‘We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Rejection of both joy and sorrow: Jesus uses the image of children playing in the marketplace to illustrate how the people of that generation rejected both joyful and sorrowful messages. The people refused to respond, no matter the tone or message, whether it was a call to celebrate or a call to mourn. This shows us that when we reject God’s message, we are missing the point of what He is trying to communicate to us.
  • Indifference to the message: The children in the marketplace represent those who are indifferent to God’s call, no matter how it is presented. Whether the message is happy or serious, they choose not to respond. This is a warning for us not to ignore God’s voice when He speaks to us in different ways.
  • Listening to God’s voice: We are called to be attentive and open to God’s messages in all circumstances. Whether the message is joyful or convicting, God is speaking to guide us, and we need to respond accordingly.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What does it mean that the people rejected both joyful and sorrowful messages from God’s messengers? How does that apply to our lives today?
  • Have you ever ignored something God has told you, either because it was hard to hear or because it didn’t fit into your plans? What was that experience like?
  • What do you think God is trying to say to you right now, and how can you listen more attentively to His voice?

Bible Reading 2: Luke 7:33-34

“For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Unfair judgment of God’s messengers: Jesus points out how both He and John the Baptist were unfairly judged by the people. John was criticized for being too serious and withdrawn, while Jesus was criticized for being too carefree and social. This shows us that people often reject God’s message because they don’t like the way it’s delivered. It’s a reminder that we shouldn’t judge God’s messengers based on our own expectations or preferences.
  • People reject what doesn’t fit their expectations: The people of Jesus’ time were not open to the truth because it didn’t fit their preconceived notions of what the Messiah or God’s messengers should look like. In the same way, we can reject God’s message when it doesn’t align with what we want or expect.
  • Responding to God’s message with openness: It’s important that we don’t close our hearts to God’s message just because it doesn’t come in a way that we expect. God’s message might challenge us to step out of our comfort zones, but we need to be willing to hear and respond with faith.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • Why do you think people rejected both John and Jesus for different reasons? How does that relate to how we sometimes reject God’s message today?
  • Do you ever find yourself rejecting God’s guidance because it doesn’t fit your expectations or preferences? How can you be more open to God’s message in your life?
  • How can we learn to listen for God’s voice, even if it comes in ways we don’t expect or want?

Bible Reading 3: Luke 7:35

“But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Wisdom is revealed in the fruit of its actions: Jesus concludes this section by saying that wisdom is proven by the results it produces. In other words, the truth of God’s message will be made clear by how it impacts our lives. If we are truly listening to God’s voice, it will show in the way we live our lives—through our actions, attitudes, and choices.
  • Proof of a faithful life: Wisdom is not just about knowledge or understanding—it’s about living out that knowledge in our everyday actions. The “children” of wisdom are those who listen to God’s message and live according to it, allowing His truth to transform them.
  • Living out God’s wisdom: This teaches us that true wisdom isn’t just intellectual—it’s practical. When we listen to God’s voice, we will live differently, and the results will show in how we treat others and in the choices we make.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What do you think Jesus means by saying that wisdom is proved right by her children? How does that relate to our lives?
  • What are some ways we can demonstrate the wisdom of God in our actions, not just in our words?
  • How can we apply God’s wisdom in our everyday lives, especially when the world around us rejects it?

Youth Group Game: “Listening Challenge”

Objective: To illustrate how listening to God’s message and responding faithfully impacts our lives.

Materials Needed: Blindfolds, a variety of objects (e.g., a ball, a spoon, a book), a designated area for the activity.

Instructions:

  1. Set up a series of objects in a room and blindfold one person.
  2. The blindfolded person has to listen to the instructions from others and navigate the room to pick up the correct items. Each time they fail to pick the right item, they must try again until they listen carefully and choose correctly.
  3. Afterward, discuss how listening carefully and responding to instructions is key to getting the right results. Relate it to how we need to listen carefully to God’s message, even if it doesn’t come in the way we expect.

Discussion After the Game:

  • How does this activity illustrate how we sometimes fail to listen to God’s guidance?
  • What are some ways you can listen more attentively to God’s voice in your life?
  • How can you be more open to God’s message, even when it’s hard or uncomfortable to hear?

Closing Prayer:

“God, thank You for speaking to us through Your messengers, whether it’s through Your Word, pastors, or even our friends. Help us to listen attentively to Your guidance and to respond faithfully. May we not reject Your message, but receive it with open hearts, and allow it to change our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
