Sunday School Lesson: Jesus and the Cornerstone – Authority and Rejection Mark 12

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

In Mark 12, Jesus tells parables and answers tough questions from religious leaders trying to trap Him. He speaks boldly about His mission and reveals what really matters—loving God and others. Even when rejected, Jesus remains the cornerstone of our faith and hope.

1. Bible Reading: Mark 12:1–11

“‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

Jesus used a parable to show how God sent prophets—and finally His Son—but people rejected them.

Even when rejected, Jesus became the foundation for something new and eternal.

God can use rejection to accomplish redemption.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think Jesus was rejected, even when He did miracles and spoke truth?
  • What does it mean that Jesus is the “cornerstone”?
  • Have you ever felt rejected—and how did God meet you in that?

2. Bible Reading: Mark 12:28–34

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength… Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

Jesus simplified what matters most: love God and love people.

This love isn’t about feelings—it’s about devotion and action.

Everything else in life should be shaped by these two commands.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think these two commands matter most to Jesus?
  • What’s one way you can love God more deeply this week?
  • What’s one way you can love someone in your life more like Jesus?

Youth Group Activity: “Love Foundation”

What You’ll Need:

  • Construction paper, markers, tape

How to Do It:

  1. Have each student write one way to love God on one block and one way to love others on another.
  2. Tape them to a wall to form a “cornerstone wall” showing love as our foundation.

Debrief

  • What are you building your life on right now?
  • How does putting Jesus first affect your decisions and relationships?

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for being our cornerstone even when the world rejected You. Help us to love You with everything we are and to love others with patience, kindness, and boldness. Build our lives on You. Amen.
