Sunday School Lesson: Love Your Enemies Luke 6:27–36

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Jesus’ teaching to love our enemies is one of the most counter-cultural commands in the Bible. For teens, this can feel impossible—especially in a world full of conflict, drama, and bullying. But Jesus calls us to a radical love that shows the world something different. This lesson helps teens wrestle with that command and learn how to live it out.

1. Bible Reading: Luke 6:27–31

“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”

Explanation For Teenagers

This is a hard teaching—Jesus is asking us to love the unlovable.

It doesn’t mean letting people walk all over you; it means choosing grace instead of revenge.

Jesus modeled this love by forgiving even while on the cross.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why is it so hard to love people who’ve hurt us?
  • What does “doing good to those who hate you” look like in real life?
  • Is there someone you need to forgive or pray for right now?

2. Bible Reading: Luke 6:32–36

“Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”

Explanation For Teenagers

It’s easy to love people who love you. The challenge is loving when it’s not returned.

God’s mercy doesn’t depend on our behavior—and He calls us to reflect that same mercy.

Mercy is strength, not weakness. It takes courage to love like Jesus.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • How is mercy different from just ignoring hurt?
  • What’s one way you can show mercy this week?
  • How can God help you love people who are hard to love?

Youth Group Activity: “Love in Action Challenge”

What You’ll Need:

  • Paper hearts, pens, and a jar or basket

How to Do It:

  1. Each student writes one loving action they could take toward someone hard to love.
  2. Place all the hearts in a jar and pray over them as a group.
  3. Challenge everyone to complete their act of love in the coming week.

Debrief

  • Was this teaching from Jesus surprising or familiar to you?
  • What’s the hardest part of loving your enemies?
  • How could loving like Jesus change your school, home, or friend group?

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for showing us what true love looks like. Help us to forgive and love like You do, even when it’s hard. Fill us with Your mercy so we can reflect Your heart to those around us. Give us the strength to respond with grace, and help us be peacemakers in a world that desperately needs it. Amen.
