Sunday School Lesson: Peter Walks on Water – Faith Over Fear Matthew 14:22–33

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

It’s easy to trust God when everything feels safe. But real faith is tested when life gets stormy. Peter’s moment on the water shows us that even a little faith can lead us closer to Jesus, and even when we start to sink, He’s there to catch us.

This lesson encourages us to step out of the boat and trust Jesus in the middle of fear and uncertainty.

1. Bible Reading: Matthew 14:22–27

“Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him… Later that night… Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him… they were terrified. But Jesus immediately said to them: ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

The disciples were in the middle of a storm—and then they saw something even more surprising: Jesus walking on water.

Fear can cloud our ability to see God clearly. But Jesus always brings courage into the chaos.

Faith starts with hearing Jesus say, “Don’t be afraid.”

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What are some “storms” that teens face today?
  • How do fear and faith show up in your daily life?
  • What does it mean to “take courage” when you’re afraid?

2. Bible Reading: Matthew 14:28–33

“‘Lord, if it’s you,’ Peter replied, ‘tell me to come to you on the water.’ ‘Come,’ he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him… And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Peter had the courage to step out—but then fear kicked in when he looked away from Jesus.

Jesus didn’t scold him—He reached out and rescued him.

Faith doesn’t mean never doubting. It means knowing who to call on when you start sinking.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think Peter started to sink?
  • Have you ever taken a “step of faith” that scared you?
  • How can we stay focused on Jesus when life feels overwhelming?

Youth Group Game: “Step Out” Challenge

What You’ll Need:

  • Blindfolds
  • Safe obstacle course or path

How to Play:

  1. Students are blindfolded and must follow voice instructions from a partner to navigate a short course.
  2. Midway through, add noise or distractions to test their focus.
  3. Debrief about how hard it is to trust and stay focused—and what helped them succeed.

Debrief

  • What helped you trust your partner during the game?
  • What “noise” in life makes it hard to hear Jesus?
  • How can you step out in faith this week?

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for calling us out of our comfort zones. Help us to focus on You, not the storms around us. Give us courage to take steps of faith and remind us that even when we fall, You’re always there to lift us up. In Your name, Amen.
