Sunday School Lesson: Jesus Walks on Water – Trusting Through Fear Matthew 14:22–33

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Life throws storms at us—situations where we feel scared, overwhelmed, or unsure. In one of the most unforgettable miracles, Jesus walks on water and shows His power over chaos. Peter steps out in faith but begins to sink when he focuses on the storm instead of Jesus.

This lesson shows us that Jesus is always close, even when we’re afraid. When we keep our eyes on Him, we can do the impossible.

1. Bible Reading: Matthew 14:22–27

“Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd… Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him… they were terrified. But Jesus immediately said to them: ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

The disciples were in a literal storm—and Jesus showed up in a way they didn’t expect.

They were afraid, but Jesus met them in their fear and reassured them.

When life feels uncertain, Jesus is already walking through it with us, calling us to trust Him.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What kind of “storms” do you face in life?
  • Why do you think the disciples didn’t recognize Jesus right away?
  • How does Jesus’ presence change the way we respond to fear?

2. Bible Reading: Matthew 14:28–33

“‘Lord, if it’s you,’ Peter replied, ‘tell me to come to you on the water.’ ‘Come,’ he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt?'”

Explanation For Teenagers

Peter had courage to step out, but when he focused on the storm, he began to sink.

Jesus didn’t let him drown—He reached out immediately. That’s the kind of Savior we have.

Faith doesn’t mean we won’t ever doubt—it means we know who to cry out to when we do.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What does Peter’s reaction teach us about faith and fear?
  • How do you usually respond when you feel overwhelmed?
  • What’s one way you can “step out of the boat” in your own faith this week?

Youth Group Game: “Faith Step”

What You’ll Need:

  • Blindfolds
  • Chairs or cones to create an obstacle path

How to Play:

  1. Blindfold one person while their teammate gives verbal directions to guide them through the obstacle course.
  2. Talk about what it felt like to trust someone without seeing where you were going.
  3. Relate it to trusting Jesus even when you can’t see what’s ahead.

Debrief

  • Was it hard to trust your teammate’s voice? Why or why not?
  • What helped you stay focused and not panic?
  • How does this help you understand trusting Jesus better?

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for meeting us in our storms. Help us to keep our eyes on You, even when things feel scary. Grow our faith, and remind us that when we call out to You, You’re always reaching out. We trust You, Lord. In Your name, Amen.
