Sunday School Lesson: The Widow’s Offering – Giving with Heart Mark 12:41–44

Introduction: Why This Matters

In a world that celebrates big moves, big gifts, and big names, it’s easy to think that small actions don’t matter. But Jesus flips that mindset in this short but powerful story about a poor widow who gave just two coins.

This lesson helps us see that what matters to God isn’t how much we give—but how we give.

1. Bible Reading: Mark 12:41–42

“Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.”

Explanation For Teenagers

People were showing off their wealth, making big donations—but Jesus noticed someone different.

The widow gave very little compared to the others, but it was everything she had.

God isn’t impressed by performance; He values authenticity and sacrifice.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think Jesus pointed out the widow’s offering?
  • Have you ever felt like your small effort didn’t matter?
  • What are some “small” things we can give that mean a lot to God?

2. Bible Reading: Mark 12:43–44

“Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

Jesus used this moment to teach His disciples what real generosity looks like.

It’s not about leftovers or what’s easy to give—it’s about trusting God with what we value most.

God sees the heart behind the gift. Even when no one else notices, He does.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • How is this story different from the way our culture sees giving?
  • What would it look like for you to give with your whole heart?
  • How can we be more like the widow in everyday life?
