Sunday School Lesson: Trusting God’s Timing – The Withered Fig Tree and Authority of Jesus Mark 11:12–33

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Sometimes God’s work in our lives isn’t instant—it takes faith and patience. In Mark 11:12–33, Jesus curses a fig tree, talks about powerful prayer, and challenges religious leaders. These scenes help us see that faith involves trusting God’s timing and recognizing His authority over all things.

1. Bible Reading: Mark 11:12–14, 20–25

“‘Have faith in God,’ Jesus answered. ‘Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, “Go, throw yourself into the sea,” and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

The fig tree looked healthy—but had no fruit. Jesus used it as a lesson about real faith.

Faith is more than appearance—it’s about living in truth and bearing fruit in your life.

Prayer and faith move mountains—but it requires belief and forgiveness.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What kind of “fruit” should faith produce in your life?
  • How does Jesus’ teaching challenge your view of prayer?
  • What does it look like to forgive when you pray?

2. Bible Reading: Mark 11:27–33

“Jesus replied, ‘I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

The religious leaders questioned Jesus—but He responded with wisdom and authority.

Jesus knows our hearts. He doesn’t play games—He invites real relationship and trust.

Following Jesus means acknowledging His authority and choosing to trust His word even when it’s uncomfortable.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do people sometimes question Jesus’ authority?
  • How do you respond when you don’t understand what God is doing?
  • How can you grow in trusting Jesus this week?

Youth Group Activity: “Faith in Motion”

What You’ll Need:

  • Paper mountains (folded paper or illustrations), pens, tape

How to Do It:

  1. Each student writes a prayer request or area of doubt/fear on a paper “mountain.”
  2. As a group, tape the mountains to a wall or board—then pray together asking God to move them.

Debrief

  • What kind of “mountain” are you asking God to move?
  • How can you practice patient, bold faith this week?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for showing us how to live with real faith. Help us trust You even when we don’t see answers right away. Give us boldness to pray, courage to forgive, and hearts that obey. We believe—but help our unbelief. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
