Sunday School Lesson: Follow Me – The Beginning of the Gospel Mark 1

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Mark 1 launches the story of Jesus’ ministry with boldness and urgency. From John the Baptist preparing the way, to Jesus calling His first disciples, this chapter shows us what it means to respond to Jesus’ invitation: “Follow me.” It challenges us to take immediate and courageous steps in our faith.

1. Bible Reading: Mark 1:14–20

“‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ At once they left their nets and followed him.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Jesus didn’t wait around—He called people right into purpose.

The disciples didn’t have all the answers, but they trusted Jesus enough to follow.

Jesus still calls us today—to trust Him, leave behind distractions, and join Him in changing lives.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What would it feel like to leave everything and follow Jesus like the disciples did?
  • What are some “nets” (distractions or comforts) that might keep you from following Jesus fully?
  • What does “fishing for people” look like for you today?

2. Bible Reading: Mark 1:32–35

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Even with crowds and chaos around Him, Jesus made time to connect with God.

Prayer was His priority—and it can be ours too.

To follow Jesus means to do what He did: carve out space to talk to and hear from the Father.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think Jesus prayed early and alone?
  • How can you make space in your day to connect with God?
  • What difference does it make when we start our day with prayer?

Youth Group Activity: “Drop the Nets”

What You’ll Need:

  • Small net (or yarn), slips of paper, pens

How to Do It:

  1. Write down one thing you feel called to “drop” in order to follow Jesus more closely.
  2. Place the paper in the net as a symbol of letting go and stepping forward in faith.

Debrief

  • What did you learn about yourself in today’s message?
  • How will you take a step closer to Jesus this week?

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for calling us to follow You. Help us to let go of whatever is holding us back and trust You completely. Teach us to hear Your voice, walk in Your ways, and live on mission. In Your name, Amen.
