Introduction: Why This Matters for Teens

Teenagers often face decisions about who to follow, what to prioritize, and how to show gratitude. John 12 teaches about worshiping Jesus, serving others, and putting faith into action. This lesson helps teens understand that following Jesus requires love, commitment, and boldness in everyday life.

Bible Reading 1: John 12:1-8 (Mary Anoints Jesus)

“Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived. A dinner was given in His honor. Mary took a pint of expensive perfume, poured it on Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. Some were indignant, saying the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor. Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone. She has done a beautiful thing to Me.’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Worship is personal: Mary expressed her love and gratitude for Jesus in a meaningful way.
  • Faith sometimes challenges opinions: Others didn’t understand, but Jesus affirmed her actions.
  • Serving and worship: True worship includes giving your best to Jesus, not worrying about what others think.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What are some ways teens can worship Jesus in everyday life?
  • Why is it important to do things for God even if others don’t understand?
  • How can acts of love and service be a form of worship?

Bible Reading 2: John 12:20-26 (Jesus Speaks About Serving)

“Some Greeks who had come to worship at the festival asked to see Jesus. He said, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Whoever serves Me must follow Me; and where I am, My servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves Me.’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Serving requires sacrifice: Following Jesus may involve putting others first or giving up comfort.
  • Faithful service multiplies impact: Small acts of service can create big changes in others’ lives.
  • Being close to Jesus: Serving Him connects us to His mission and brings honor from God.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • What are ways teens can serve Jesus at home, school, or in their community?
  • Why is sacrifice sometimes necessary in following God?
  • How does serving others bring glory to God?

Bible Reading 3: John 12:44-50 (Jesus Calls for Belief)

“Jesus cried out, ‘Whoever believes in Me does not just believe in Me but in the One who sent Me. I have come into the world as a light, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness. I do not judge anyone; I have come to save the world.’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Faith in action: Believing in Jesus is trusting Him and following His example.
  • Light over darkness: Following Jesus removes fear, confusion, and doubt.
  • God’s mission: Jesus came to save, not condemn, showing God’s love for everyone.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  • How can believing in Jesus change your everyday decisions?
  • What areas of your life feel like “darkness” that Jesus can illuminate?
  • Why is it important to remember that Jesus came to save, not condemn?

Youth Group Activity: “Serving and Worship Reflection”

Objective: Help teens identify ways to serve Jesus and worship Him through their actions.

Materials: Paper, pens, sticky notes.

Instructions:

  1. Ask each teen to write one way they can serve God or others this week on a sticky note.
  2. Write one way they can worship Jesus through their actions or attitude on a separate note.
  3. Place the notes on a board or wall as a reminder to act on these commitments.
  4. Close with prayer, asking God to give courage and passion to serve and worship Him faithfully.

Key Takeaways for Teens:

  • Worship and service are expressions of faith and love for Jesus.
  • Following Jesus may require sacrifice and courage.
  • Believing in Jesus brings light into our lives and purpose to our actions.
  • Every teen can make an impact by serving and worshiping God daily.

Closing Prayer:

“Jesus, thank You for showing us what it means to serve and worship You. Help us to follow You boldly, give our best, and trust You with every part of our lives. Guide us to be lights in the world and faithful servants in Your name. Amen.”

  1. I only have 1 student in my Jr. High class. There is no reason to play any games, because most of them take more than one person. This young lady has been raised in the church her whole young life. She doesn’t need to study all the stories she has listened to all these years. She needs to learn how to use those stories as a maturing young lady. Do you have any suggestions.
