Youth Ministry Lesson on 1 Corinthians 6:12-20: Embracing Purity in a Culture of Temptation

Print Friendly and PDF

As teenagers navigating through a world filled with mixed messages and temptations, it’s crucial for us to understand how to live out our faith in a way that honors God. In 1 Corinthians 6:12-20, the apostle Paul addresses the issue of sexual immorality and reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. This passage not only speaks directly to the challenges we face today but also encourages us to embrace purity and glorify God in all areas of our lives.

Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

_”I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”_ (NIV)

Explanation

  • We have freedom in Christ, but not everything is beneficial or edifying for our spiritual growth.
  • Our bodies are not meant for sexual immorality, but rather as instruments to honor and serve the Lord.
  • As followers of Christ, our bodies are united with Him, and therefore, engaging in sexual immorality is a contradiction to our identity in Him.
  • Sexual sins are unique because they directly affect our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit.
  • We are called to flee from sexual immorality and instead honor God with our bodies, recognizing that we were bought at a price by the sacrifice of Jesus.

Youth Group Game: “Temple Tag”

Objective: Emphasize the importance of honoring our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit.

Instructions:

  1. Designate an area as the playing field.
  2. Choose one person to be the “Guardian” (represents the Holy Spirit) and give them a small object to hold (e.g., a flashlight).
  3. The remaining players are “Runners.”
  4. The Guardian’s task is to tag the Runners while holding the object.
  5. Whenever a Runner is tagged, they must freeze and recite a Bible verse related to purity or honoring God with their bodies.
  6. The game continues until all Runners are tagged or time runs out.

Closing Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word that guides and instructs us in how to live for you. Help us to embrace purity and honor you with our bodies. Fill us with your Holy Spirit, empowering us to make choices that align with your will. Give us the strength to flee from sexual immorality and to be a light in a culture that often promotes darkness. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

Remember, as we seek to live for Christ in a culture filled with temptation, let us encourage one another and lean on God’s grace and guidance.
