Youth Group Lesson for Teens: The Power of Words Proverbs 18:21

Print Friendly and PDF

Words are powerful. Whether spoken, written, or shared online, your words have the ability to build up or tear down, to heal or to hurt. As teenagers, you’re living in a world where communication happens constantly, and it’s easy to forget how impactful your words can be. In this lesson, we’ll explore what the Bible says about the power of words, how we can use them for good, and why it’s important to be mindful of what we say.

Bible Reading 1: Proverbs 18:21 (NIV)

“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • This verse reveals a truth that’s often overlooked—our words hold the power of life and death. What we say can build someone up or destroy them.
  • It’s not just about what we say to others, but also the words we speak about ourselves.
  • The “fruit” of our words will come back to us. If we spread positivity, love, and encouragement, we will experience the benefits of that, but if we spread negativity, it will eventually affect us too.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. Can you think of a time when someone’s words made you feel really good or really bad? How did that affect you?
  2. How do you think your words have the power of life and death in everyday situations?
  3. What are some practical ways you can be more mindful of the words you use?

Bible Reading 2: James 3:5-6 (NIV)

“Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire…”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • James is warning us about the destructive power of our words. A small word or comment can ignite a fire of hurt, anger, or division.
  • Think about how quickly a rumor or a harsh comment can spread and cause damage. Once those words are out, they’re hard to take back.
  • Being aware of the potential harm words can cause helps us to be more careful with how we speak, especially in emotionally charged situations.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. Have you ever seen a small comment or rumor blow up into a big issue? What happened?
  2. Why do you think it’s so easy to say hurtful things in the heat of the moment?
  3. How can we learn to “pause” before we speak, especially when we’re upset?

Bible Reading 3: Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • This verse encourages us to think before we speak and to use our words to encourage and uplift others.
  • It’s easy to gossip, criticize, or make fun of people, but this doesn’t align with the life God wants us to live. Instead, we should focus on using our words to build others up.
  • When we speak kindly and thoughtfully, we not only help others feel good but also set an example of Christ’s love.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. What are some examples of “unwholesome talk” that you hear regularly? How can you avoid getting involved?
  2. Why is it important to use your words to build others up? How does this reflect your faith?
  3. What are some encouraging words or phrases you could use more often with friends or family?

Youth Group Game: “Telephone Challenge”

  • Objective: To demonstrate how words can change and become distorted when passed along carelessly.
  • How to Play: Line up students and have one person whisper a phrase to the next person, and so on down the line. The last person says the phrase out loud and compares it to the original.
  • Debrief: Discuss how, just like in the game, words can easily become twisted or misunderstood. This is why it’s important to be clear, truthful, and intentional with our communication.

Closing Prayer

Dear God, thank You for reminding us of the power our words have. Help us to be mindful of the things we say and to always choose words that bring life, encouragement, and hope. Guide us in using our voices for good, and teach us to reflect Your love in every conversation we have. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
