Print Friendly and PDF

Hey everyone! Today we’re diving into an important topic that can totally transform our lives: Abiding in Christ. We’re going to explore John 15:5, where Jesus says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing.”

Why This Topic Matters

As teenagers, you’re navigating a ton of changes and challenges. Friends, school, family, and figuring out who you are can be overwhelming. Abiding in Christ means staying connected to Jesus, the source of our strength and life. It’s about relying on Him in everything and knowing we can’t do it alone. This lesson will help you understand how to stay connected to Jesus and why it’s crucial for your faith journey.

Explanation For Teenagers

John 15:5 (NIV)

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing.”

  • Jesus as the Vine: Jesus is the source of life, just like a vine provides nutrients to its branches.
  • We are the Branches: We depend on Jesus for spiritual nourishment and strength.
  • Bearing Fruit: When we stay connected to Jesus, our lives produce good things—love, joy, peace, and more.
  • Apart from Jesus: Without staying connected to Jesus, we can’t achieve anything meaningful spiritually.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  1. What does it mean to you to be connected to Jesus like a branch to a vine?
  2. Can you think of a time when you felt especially close to God? What was that like?
  3. What are some ways you can stay connected to Jesus in your daily life?

Explanation For Teenagers

Psalm 1:3 (NIV)

“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”

  • Tree by Streams of Water: Just as a tree needs water, we need God’s Word and presence.
  • Yielding Fruit: Staying connected to God leads to a fruitful life.
  • Prosperity in God’s Way: True success comes from abiding in God.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  1. How does this verse compare to John 15:5?
  2. What are the “streams of water” in your life that help you stay nourished spiritually?
  3. Why is it important to yield fruit in season?

Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

  • Fruit of the Spirit: These are the qualities that grow in us when we’re connected to Jesus.
  • Evidence of Connection: Our character and actions show if we’re abiding in Christ.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  1. Which fruit of the Spirit do you see in your own life? Which do you want to grow more in?
  2. How can staying connected to Jesus help you develop these qualities?
  3. Share an example of someone you know who exhibits the fruit of the Spirit.

Youth Group Game: Vine and Branches Tag

Materials Needed:

  • Cones or markers to define play area
  • A soft ball or bean bag

Instructions:

  1. Designate one person to be the “vine” and another to be the “gardener” (who holds the ball/bean bag).
  2. The rest of the group are “branches” and must stay connected to the “vine” by holding hands.
  3. The gardener tries to tag the branches with the ball. If a branch is tagged, they must freeze.
  4. The vine can “unfreeze” branches by tagging them.
  5. After a few minutes, switch roles and play again.

Purpose:

This game illustrates the importance of staying connected to the vine (Jesus) and how we can help each other stay strong in our faith.

Closing Prayer

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for being the true vine and for inviting us to stay connected to You. Help us to understand the importance of abiding in You every day. May we bear much fruit in our lives that brings glory to You. Guide us, strengthen us, and keep us close to You. Bless each of these amazing teenagers as they grow in their faith and navigate their daily lives. In Your name, we pray.

Amen.

Remember, staying connected to Jesus isn’t just a one-time thing. It’s a daily choice to rely on Him and let His love and power flow through us. Keep abiding in Him, and you’ll see incredible things happen in your life!
