Print Friendly and PDF

Today’s topic is all about miracles and the transformative power they hold in our lives. As teenagers, you’re at a stage where life is full of challenges, uncertainties, and questions about your identity and purpose. Discovering the miracles in the Bible can help you navigate through these times with faith and hope.

Our focus today is on John 5:1-9, a passage that reveals the compassionate nature of Jesus through a miraculous healing. This story isn’t just a historical account; it’s a powerful reminder that Jesus can bring healing and transformation into our lives too.

Bible Reading: John 5:1-9 (NIV)

  1. Afterward, Jesus returned to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish holy days.
  2. Inside the city, near the Sheep Gate, was the pool of Bethesda, with five covered porches.
  3. Crowds of sick people—blind, lame, or paralyzed—lay on the porches.
  4. One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years.
  5. When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?”
  6. “I can’t, sir,” the sick man said, “for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.”
  7. Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!”
  8. Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking! But this miracle happened on the Sabbath,
  9. so the Jewish leaders objected. They said to the man who was cured, “You can’t work on the Sabbath! The law doesn’t allow you to carry that sleeping mat!”

Explanation For Teenagers

  • Setting the Scene: The story takes place at the pool of Bethesda during a Jewish holy day. The pool was known for its perceived healing properties.
  • The Broken Man: The man in the story had been sick for 38 years, representing a long-standing struggle or burden.
  • Jesus’ Question: “Would you like to get well?” Jesus initiates a conversation, showing His compassion and desire to bring healing to our lives.
  • Excuses and Limitations: The man’s response reflects how sometimes we make excuses or focus on our limitations rather than accepting Jesus’ offer of transformation.

Youth Group Game: “Miracle Relay”

Engage the teens with a fun and energetic game. Set up a relay race where participants must overcome obstacles and reach a designated “healing zone.” Emphasize teamwork, perseverance, and the idea that miracles often require action. After the game, relate their experiences to the challenges the man faced in the Bible passage.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  1. Breaking Barriers: What are the barriers or challenges in your life that you feel like you’ve been stuck in for a long time?
  2. Excuses vs. Faith: Have you ever found yourself making excuses or focusing on limitations instead of trusting in God’s ability to bring change?
  3. Jesus’ Compassion: How does Jesus’ question, “Would you like to get well?” reflect His compassion for us today?
  4. Taking Action: In the story, the man had to take action by standing up and walking. What steps can you take in your own life to experience God’s transformative power?

Bible Reading: Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV)

  1. “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.
  2. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

Explanation For Teenagers

  • Letting Go of the Past: Isaiah encourages us to forget the past and not be held back by it.
  • God’s Promise of Renewal: God promises to do a new thing, bringing forth change and transformation.
  • A Way in the Wilderness: Even in the most challenging times, God can make a way for us.

Closing Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the powerful lesson we’ve explored today. Help us to let go of our past, trust in Your transformative power, and take the necessary steps towards healing and growth. May we be open to the miracles You want to unleash in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
