But fear not! Through this lesson, we’ll discover how faith in Jesus can break through any obstacle in our lives.

Let’s jump into the Scripture with anticipation and excitement!

Bible Reading 1: Mark 2:1-5 (NIV)

1 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

Explanation For Teenagers

  • The scene is set in Capernaum, where Jesus had returned.
  • The crowd was so large that people couldn’t even get near the door.
  • Imagine the determination of the friends to get their paralyzed buddy to Jesus.
  • They went to extreme lengths, literally tearing the roof open, to reach Jesus.
  • Jesus was not just moved by the paralyzed man’s need but also by the faith of his friends.
  • Jesus’ initial response, “Son, your sins are forgiven,” challenges our understanding of faith and healing.

Youth Group Game: “Faith Obstacle Course”

Set up an obstacle course that represents different barriers teenagers may face. Each station can have challenges related to peer pressure, academic stress, self-doubt, etc. Divide the youth into teams and challenge them to navigate through the course. Emphasize the importance of teamwork and faith in overcoming obstacles.

Bible Reading 2: Mark 2:6-12 (NIV)

6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Explanation For Teenagers

  • The religious leaders question Jesus’ authority to forgive sins.
  • Jesus, aware of their thoughts, addresses their doubts.
  • He poses a rhetorical question about what’s easier: forgiving sins or physical healing.
  • Jesus demonstrates His authority by healing the paralyzed man, proving His ability to forgive sins.
  • The crowd’s astonishment reflects the impact of witnessing faith in action.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  1. Reflect on the friends’ determination to bring the paralyzed man to Jesus. How does this inspire you in your faith journey?
  2. Why do you think Jesus addressed the man’s sins before healing him? What does this teach us about the connection between faith and forgiveness?
  3. The religious leaders questioned Jesus’ authority. How do doubts and skepticism affect our ability to witness and experience miracles in our lives?
  4. In what ways can we tear down metaphorical “roofs” in our lives to bring our friends closer to Jesus?
  5. How can we, as a youth group, show the world the authority and power of Jesus in our lives?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank you for this powerful lesson on faith and the authority of Jesus. Help us, Lord, to approach you with boldness, tearing down any barriers that may stand between us and your love. May our faith be a testimony to those around us, and may we experience the fullness of your forgiveness and healing. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
