Sunday School Lesson: The Temptation of Jesus Luke 4

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Temptation is real—especially for teenagers. In Luke 4, Jesus is tempted in the wilderness, but He doesn’t fall. Instead, He uses Scripture and the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome. This story gives teens the tools and confidence to face their own temptations and remain faithful to God.

1. Bible Reading: Luke 4:1–4

“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Jesus was hungry, tired, and isolated—prime moments for temptation.

The devil targeted His weakness, just like he tries to do with us.

Jesus answered with Scripture: the truth is our strongest defense.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What’s a temptation you think teens face a lot?
  • Why do you think Jesus used Scripture to fight back?
  • How can you be spiritually strong when you feel weak?

2. Bible Reading: Luke 4:5–13

“When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.”

Explanation For Teenagers

The devil won’t give up after one try—temptation is persistent.

Jesus stayed grounded in who He was and Whose He was.

God provides us with strength, identity, and Scripture to overcome too.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why is it important to know your identity in God?
  • Have you ever had a time where Scripture helped you stay strong?
  • How can you prepare ahead of time for moments of temptation?

Youth Group Activity: “Temptation Scenarios”

What You’ll Need:

  • Notecards with realistic teen temptation scenarios (e.g., peer pressure, cheating, gossip)

How to Do It:

  1. Divide students into pairs or small groups and give each a card.
  2. Have them discuss how they would respond like Jesus—with truth and strength.

Debrief

  • What was hard about thinking through those scenarios?
  • How did knowing Scripture help your answers?
  • What will you take with you from Jesus’ example?

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for showing us how to resist temptation. Help us stay rooted in Your Word, know who we are in You, and walk in the power of Your Spirit. Give us courage to stand firm and honor You with our choices. In Your name, Amen.
