Sunday School Lesson: Elisha and the Floating Axe Head – God Cares About the Little Things 2 Kings 6:1-7

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Have you ever lost something important to you? Maybe a phone, a piece of jewelry, or something sentimental. Losing things can be frustrating, but did you know that God cares about even the small problems in our lives?

In today’s story, a group of prophets was working on a project when one of them lost something critical—an iron axe head that sank into the river. But through Elisha, God performed a miracle to bring it back. This shows us that God is not only concerned with big, dramatic events—He cares about the little things in our lives, too!

1. Bible Reading: 2 Kings 6:1-5

“The company of the prophets said to Elisha, ‘Look, the place where we meet with you is too small for us. Let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a pole; and let us build a place for us to meet.’ And he said, ‘Go.’ Then one of them said, ‘Won’t you please come with your servants?’ ‘I will,’ Elisha replied. And he went with them. They went to the Jordan and began to cut down trees. As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axe head fell into the water. ‘Oh no, my lord!’ he cried out. ‘It was borrowed!'”

Explanation For Teenagers

The prophets were just trying to build a meeting place when an accident happened—one of them lost a borrowed axe head in the river.

The axe head wasn’t just a tool; it was expensive and belonged to someone else, which made it a serious problem.

This moment teaches us that God is involved in the details of our lives, even when it’s something small.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think the prophet was so upset about losing the axe head?
  • Have you ever been in a situation where you lost something important? How did you feel?
  • What does this story teach us about God’s care for even the little things in our lives?

2. Bible Reading: 2 Kings 6:6-7

“The man of God asked, ‘Where did it fall?’ When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there, and made the iron float. ‘Lift it out,’ he said. Then the man reached out his hand and took it.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Elisha didn’t panic—he simply trusted that God could help in this small situation.

Iron doesn’t float, but God’s power is greater than science—He can do the impossible!

This miracle reminds us that God is always willing to help us, no matter how small the issue seems.
