Sunday School Lesson: Remembering God’s Faithfulness – The Stones from the Jordan Joshua 4

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Joshua 4 is a chapter about remembering. After the Israelites crossed the Jordan River on dry ground, God told them to take stones from the river and set them up as a memorial. It was a physical reminder of God’s faithfulness and power. This story teaches us the importance of remembering what God has done in our lives.

1. Bible Reading: Joshua 4:1–7

“Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder… to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord… These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”

Explanation For Teenagers

God wanted His people to remember—not just for their sake, but so future generations would know His power.

Memorials help us build faith when we face new challenges.

We all need reminders that God has been faithful in the past and will be faithful again.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think God wanted the Israelites to build a memorial?
  • How can remembering God’s faithfulness help us today?
  • What’s something in your life you want to remember and thank God for?

2. Bible Reading: Joshua 4:19–24

“He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.”

Explanation For Teenagers

God’s miracles aren’t just personal—they’re meant to be shared.

When we tell our stories, we point others to God’s strength, not our own.

Our lives can be a living memorial when we reflect God’s faithfulness to others.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What’s one way you’ve seen God work in your life?
  • How can sharing that story encourage someone else?
  • What are some ways we can remember and celebrate what God has done?

Youth Group Game: “Memory Stones”

What You’ll Need:

  • Small rocks or paper “stones”
  • Markers or pens

How to Play:

  1. Have students write a word or phrase on a rock that reminds them of a time God was faithful.
  2. Create a “memorial pile” in the room or have them take it home as a reminder.
  3. Allow time to share testimonies if students feel comfortable.

Debrief

  • What word or phrase did you write, and why?
  • How does remembering help you face the future?
  • Who in your life needs to hear about God’s faithfulness?

Closing Prayer

God, thank You for Your faithfulness in the past and Your promises for the future. Help us remember Your goodness and never take it for granted. Teach us to tell others what You’ve done, so they too can trust in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
