Sunday School Lesson: The Promise and the Preparation – Jesus Is Coming Luke 1

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Luke 1 kicks off one of the most detailed accounts of Jesus’ life. It starts with promises—God announcing something amazing is about to happen. Even when people doubt or don’t understand, God is at work. Teenagers can learn to trust that God is always writing a bigger story, even when it seems confusing.

1. Bible Reading: Luke 1:5–25

“Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard… your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.”

Explanation For Teenagers

God answers prayer, even when it feels like it’s been a long time coming.

Zechariah was faithful, but he still doubted—yet God used him anyway.

God often starts His big moves in small, quiet ways.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Have you ever prayed for something for a long time?
  • How do you respond when it feels like God is silent?
  • What does it mean that God still worked through Zechariah, even in his doubt?

2. Bible Reading: Luke 1:26–38

“I am the Lord’s servant… May your word to me be fulfilled.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Mary was young, probably a teenager—and God chose her for an incredible mission.

Her response wasn’t about having all the answers—it was about trusting the God who does.

God still calls teens today to step into big faith roles.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What do you think it was like for Mary to get that message?
  • How can you be open to what God wants to do through your life?
  • What’s one way you can say “yes” to God this week?

Youth Group Activity: “Promise Chain”

What You’ll Need:

  • Construction paper, scissors, markers, tape or stapler

How to Do It:

  1. Each student writes a promise of God from Scripture on a paper strip.
  2. Link the strips together to form a long paper chain—visually representing God’s unbroken promises.

Debrief

  • What did you learn from Zechariah and Mary’s responses?
  • How can you trust God with your own future?

Closing Prayer

God, thank You for keeping Your promises. Thank You for choosing regular people to do amazing things. Help us trust You, even when we’re unsure or scared. Help us to say yes to whatever You ask of us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
