Sunday School Lesson: Joseph in Prison – Faithfulness in the Dark Genesis 39:19–23

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Sometimes life feels unfair—like you’re being punished for doing the right thing. Joseph was thrown into prison for something he didn’t do. But instead of giving up or getting bitter, he stayed faithful—and God was with him through it all.

This lesson reminds us that God sees us even in the dark places and is working through our faithfulness, even when things don’t make sense.

1. Bible Reading: Genesis 39:19–21

“When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, ‘This is how your slave treated me,’ he burned with anger. Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Joseph did nothing wrong—in fact, he resisted temptation—and still ended up in jail.

But God didn’t abandon him. Even in prison, God’s presence and favor were with Joseph.

This reminds us that being faithful doesn’t always mean life will be easy, but God will never leave us.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Have you ever been punished or misunderstood for doing the right thing?
  • What does it mean that “the Lord was with him” in prison?
  • How can we stay faithful when life feels unfair or difficult?

2. Bible Reading: Genesis 39:22–23

“So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.”

Explanation For Teenagers

Joseph rose to leadership even in prison because he was trustworthy and faithful.

God used his integrity to bless others—even in a place most people would consider hopeless.

This shows us that no matter where we are, we can be used by God when we stay faithful.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • How did Joseph’s attitude help him succeed in prison?
  • What are some hard places where we might still be able to serve and grow?
  • How can we trust that God is working, even when we feel stuck?

Youth Group Game: “Prison to Purpose”

What You’ll Need:

  • Index cards with challenges or mini-games
  • Obstacles or stations to simulate a “prison path”

How to Play:

  1. Set up stations with tasks representing difficult circumstances (e.g., patience challenge, blindfold walk, puzzle under pressure).
  2. As students complete each one faithfully, they “move closer” to the leadership position at the end.
  3. Discuss how each station represents a moment where faithfulness leads to growth.

Debrief

  • What part of the game was the hardest to stay focused in?
  • How does this activity relate to Joseph’s experience in prison?
  • Where in your life do you feel God is asking you to be faithful right now?

Closing Prayer

God, thank You for staying with us, even in our hardest moments. Help us to be like Joseph—faithful, patient, and full of integrity. When life feels unfair or dark, remind us that You are working and that You have a purpose for our story. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
