Sunday School Lesson: Jesus Calms the Storm – Trusting God in Chaos Matthew 8

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Matthew 8 shows Jesus’ authority over the natural world when He calms a raging storm with just a word. His disciples were terrified, but Jesus asked them, “Why are you afraid?” This story reminds us that even in the middle of chaos, Jesus is in control—and we can trust Him completely.

1. Bible Reading: Matthew 8:23–27

“Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake… But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!’… He replied, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?'”

Explanation For Teenagers

The storm scared the disciples—even though Jesus was right there with them.

Sometimes we feel like God is “asleep” in our storms, but He’s not. He’s just not afraid.

Faith isn’t the absence of fear—it’s choosing to trust Jesus in the middle of it.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What storms (challenges) are you facing right now?
  • Why do you think Jesus questioned their fear?
  • What helps you trust God when life feels chaotic?

2. Bible Reading: Matthew 8:1–3

“A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, ‘Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.’ Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be clean!'”

Explanation For Teenagers

Jesus didn’t just heal physically—He touched someone who others avoided.

Jesus meets us in our pain, our fear, and even our shame—and says, “I am willing.”

He cares about every part of us, and nothing makes us untouchable to Him.

Youth Group Discussion Questions
