Introduction: Why This Matters
Life can feel like a long journey with lots of waiting and wandering. In Deuteronomy 2, the Israelites are nearing the end of their 40 years in the wilderness. Through Moses’ words, we see that God had been guiding, protecting, and providing the entire time—even when it didn’t feel like it.
This lesson is about trusting God when the road is long and the progress feels slow.
1. Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 2:1–7
“Then we turned back and set out toward the wilderness… For a long time we made our way around the hill country… The Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything.”
Explanation For Teenagers
The Israelites spent years wandering—but God didn’t abandon them.
Even in the waiting, He was providing food, clothes, and direction.
This reminds us that even when we can’t see it, God is working and walking with us.
Youth Group Discussion Questions

2. Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 2:24–31
“Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge. See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon… Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle… But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through, for the Lord your God had made his spirit stubborn… so that he might deliver him into your hands.”
Explanation For Teenagers
Sometimes the things that block us are actually part of God’s plan to strengthen and prepare us.
God gave the Israelites victory—but not without resistance. He was setting the stage for His promises to be fulfilled.
God might be preparing you for something bigger than you expect.
Youth Group Discussion Questions
- Why do you think God allowed resistance even when He had a plan?
- What’s a challenge in your life that might be preparing you for something greater?
- How can we trust God even when things don’t go smoothly?

Closing Prayer
God, thank You for walking with us through every season—even when it feels like we’re not getting anywhere. Help us to trust Your timing, Your provision, and Your faithfulness. Teach us to keep going and to remember that You never leave us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
