Sunday School Lesson: God Delivers – Hezekiah and the Siege of Jerusalem 2 Kings 19

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

In 2 Kings 19, King Hezekiah faces a terrifying threat from the Assyrian army. But instead of panicking, he turns to God in prayer. God responds by protecting His people in a miraculous way. This story reminds us that no situation is too big for God and that prayer is our greatest weapon.

1. Bible Reading: 2 Kings 19:14–19

“Hezekiah went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord. And Hezekiah prayed… ‘You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth… Now, Lord our God, deliver us… so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, Lord, are God.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

Hezekiah didn’t try to fix things on his own—he brought his fear and problem straight to God.

When we feel overwhelmed, prayer isn’t our last resort—it should be our first response.

God wants to hear our prayers and show His power in our lives.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • What’s your first instinct when you feel scared or overwhelmed?
  • Why do you think Hezekiah brought the letter to the temple?
  • What’s one thing you need to “spread out before God” right now?

2. Bible Reading: 2 Kings 19:32–36

“Therefore this is what the Lord says… ‘I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant.’ That night the angel of the Lord went out and put to death 185,000 in the Assyrian camp.”

Explanation For Teenagers

God fought the battle for Hezekiah. His people didn’t lift a sword—God defended them.

When we trust God with our battles, He moves in ways we can’t predict or control.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is pray, wait, and believe.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • How does this part of the story show God’s power?
  • Have you ever seen God answer a big or small prayer?
  • What’s one way you can trust God more this week with your worries?

Youth Group Activity: “Lay It Before the Lord”

What You’ll Need:

  • Paper, pens, and a small table or space to symbolize the altar

How to Do It:

  1. Students write down something they’re worried about or struggling with.
  2. One by one, they come and lay it on the altar, symbolizing giving it to God like Hezekiah did.
  3. Pray together over all the requests.

Debrief

  • How did it feel to physically give your worry to God?
  • What can help you remember to pray first in stressful moments?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for fighting battles we can’t see and being faithful even when we’re afraid. Help us to bring our worries to You first and to trust that You are working in every situation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
