Sunday School Lesson for Teens: “Eternity in Our Hearts – Understanding the Longing for Something Greater” Ecclesiastes 3:11

Print Friendly and PDF

Have you ever wondered why nothing in this world fully satisfies us, no matter how much we achieve or experience? Deep down, we all have a desire for something more, something eternal. As teenagers, you’re constantly chasing new experiences, dreams, and friendships. But there’s a reason why these things don’t always fill the emptiness you might feel. The Bible tells us that God has placed eternity in our hearts—a longing for something beyond this world. This lesson will help you understand that longing and show you how only God can truly satisfy the deepest desires of your heart.

Bible Reading 1: Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV)

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Solomon, the author of Ecclesiastes, writes that God has put a sense of eternity in our hearts. This means that deep inside, we all have a desire for something beyond this life.
  • No matter how much we achieve or how many things we own, there will always be a part of us that longs for more—because we were made for eternity with God.
  • The things of this world can never fully satisfy because our hearts were made for something greater: a relationship with God and the hope of eternal life.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. What are some things that you’ve chased after that you thought would make you happy, but didn’t?
  2. Have you ever felt a longing for something more, even when things were going well in life? Why do you think that is?
  3. How does knowing that God has placed eternity in your heart change how you view the things of this world?

Bible Reading 2: 2 Corinthians 5:1-2 (NIV)

“For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling.”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Paul compares our earthly lives to a tent—temporary and fragile. But he reminds us that we have an eternal home waiting for us in heaven.
  • The “groaning” or longing we feel is our soul’s desire to be with God in eternity. The frustrations and struggles we experience in this life point us toward our real home with Him.
  • This life is not all there is. Our longing for something more is a reminder that we’re meant for eternal life with God.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. What do you think Paul means by “earthly tent”? How does that image relate to your life right now?
  2. How does the promise of an eternal home in heaven give you hope, especially during difficult times?
  3. Why do you think God allows us to feel this longing for eternity while we’re still on earth?

Bible Reading 3: John 4:13-14 (NIV)

“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • Jesus tells the Samaritan woman at the well that physical water can only satisfy for a short time, but He offers something greater—eternal life, a source of satisfaction that never runs dry.
  • Just like physical thirst, our spiritual thirst can only be quenched by Jesus. Everything else in life (money, relationships, success) might feel satisfying for a while, but it doesn’t last.
  • The “living water” Jesus offers is the relationship we have with Him, which fulfills the deepest longings of our heart and leads us to eternal life.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. What are some things you’ve chased after that felt satisfying at first but left you feeling empty later on?
  2. How does the “living water” Jesus talks about differ from the things the world offers us?
  3. How can you experience the satisfaction that only comes from a relationship with Jesus?

Bible Reading 4: Revelation 21:6 (NIV)

“He said to me: ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.’”

Explanation for Teenagers:

  • This verse is a promise of God’s ultimate fulfillment of our desires. At the end of time, He will give eternal life freely to those who thirst for Him.
  • The longing you feel for something more isn’t just about this life; it points toward the future when all things will be made new and perfect in God’s presence.
  • Eternity with God will fully satisfy every longing and desire we have, and it is given to us freely through Jesus.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. What do you think it will be like to experience eternity with God?
  2. How does the promise of eternal life change the way you live now?
  3. Why do you think God offers us the “water of life” without cost? What does that say about His love?

Youth Group Game: “Chasing the Unseen”

  • Objective: To illustrate the feeling of longing for something you can’t see or fully grasp.
  • How to Play: Create a scavenger hunt where the teens are given a series of clues that lead them to an invisible “treasure” (you can use an object or a note representing eternal life). The catch is that some clues lead to dead ends, representing the temporary things we chase in life.
  • Debrief: After the game, discuss how the game relates to chasing temporary things in life versus pursuing eternal life with God. Ask the group how it felt to chase things that didn’t satisfy and how it felt when they found the true treasure.

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for placing eternity in our hearts. Help us to understand that our longing for more is really a longing for You. Teach us to seek satisfaction in You and not in the things of this world. Remind us daily that this life is temporary, but You offer us eternal life that fully satisfies. Guide us in our journey of faith and help us stay focused on the eternal treasure You’ve promised. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. I love the scavenger hunt idea and it is exactly what I was looking for but I was really hoping you had an actual hunt already created!
