Sunday School Lesson: Esther – Courage and Faith in Difficult Times Esther 4:14

Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

Have you ever been in a situation where you had to stand up for what was right, even though it was difficult? Esther found herself in a position where she had to risk everything to save her people. Her story teaches us about courage, faith, and trusting God even when we’re afraid.

Today, we’ll explore how Esther’s bravery can inspire us to take a stand for what is right, even when it’s hard.

1. Bible Reading: Esther 4:14

“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”

Explanation For Teenagers

Esther was chosen to be queen, but she didn’t know that one day she would have to risk her life to save her people.

Mordecai reminded her that God placed her in that position for a reason—sometimes, we are put in places to make a difference.

God gives us courage when we need it. We don’t have to be afraid to stand up for what is right.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • Have you ever been in a situation where you had to stand up for what was right? What happened?
  • Why do you think Esther was afraid to speak up at first?
  • What does it mean to trust God when we are afraid?

2. Bible Reading: Joshua 1:9

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Explanation For Teenagers

God commands us to be strong and courageous because He is always with us.

Fear can stop us from doing the right thing, but trusting in God gives us the strength to act.

Like Esther, we may not always see God working, but He has a plan for our lives.

Youth Group Discussion Questions

  • How can we find courage in difficult situations?
  • What are some fears that stop people from doing the right thing?
  • How does knowing that God is with us help us to be brave?

Youth Group Game: “Courage Challenge”

What You’ll Need:

  • A set of challenge cards with different bravery tests (e.g., “Sing a song in front of the group,” “Give a word of encouragement to someone,” “Stand on a chair and recite a Bible verse”).

How to Play:

  1. Each student picks a challenge card and must complete it.
  2. Discuss how courage isn’t about being fearless but about acting despite fear.

Debrief

  • How did it feel to step out of your comfort zone?
  • What does this activity teach us about trusting God with our fears?
  • How can we apply courage in real-life situations?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for the story of Esther and the reminder that You have placed us where we are for a reason. Help us to trust You when we are afraid and to have the courage to do what is right. Give us strength to stand firm in faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
