Print Friendly and PDF

Introduction: Why This Matters

In 1 Samuel 20, we see the deep bond of friendship between David and Jonathan. Even though Jonathan’s father, King Saul, wanted to kill David, Jonathan stood up for his friend and made a covenant of loyalty. Their story reminds us how powerful godly friendship can be in difficult times.

1. Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 20:12–17

“Jonathan said to David, ‘I swear by the Lord… If I am still alive, show me the steadfast love of the Lord, that I may not die; and do not cut off your steadfast love from my house forever.'”

Explanation For Teenagers

Jonathan and David’s friendship was built on trust, honesty, and shared faith in God.

Jonathan put his friend’s safety above his own interests, even though it meant standing up to his father.

Real friendship reflects God’s love—faithful, sacrificial, and committed.
