Introduction: Why This Matters
In 1 Samuel 10, Saul is anointed as Israel’s first king—but instead of stepping up with confidence, he hides in fear. His story shows us how God calls people not because they’re perfect, but because He has a plan. It challenges us to step into the roles God gives us, even when we feel uncertain.
1. Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 10:1, 9–11
“Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, ‘Has not the Lord anointed you ruler over his inheritance?’… As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all these signs were fulfilled that day.”
Explanation For Teenagers
God called Saul and even changed his heart—but Saul still had to choose to lead.
God doesn’t wait for us to feel totally ready—He calls us as we are and walks with us.
Real leadership starts with listening and obeying God’s voice, not our insecurities.

2. Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 10:20–24
“Finally Saul son of Kish was taken. But when they looked for him, he was not to be found. So they inquired of the Lord further, ‘Has the man come here yet?’ And the Lord said, ‘Yes, he has hidden himself among the supplies.'”
Explanation For Teenagers
Saul literally hid when it was time to lead. Fear kept him from stepping into what God had for him.
We all face moments when we feel afraid or unqualified—but God still calls us forward.
Hiding never leads to growth. Courage is saying yes even when we’re scared.
Youth Group Discussion Questions
- Have you ever felt like hiding instead of showing up?
