Print Friendly and PDF

As teenagers, it’s important to nurture and grow our faith in God. The challenges we face during these years can sometimes make us question our beliefs and values. However, by studying the Word of God, we can find guidance, inspiration, and encouragement to strengthen our faith. Today, we will dive into Malachi 3:1-4, which speaks about the coming of the Messiah and the refining work that God wants to do in our lives.

Bible Reading: Malachi 3:1-2

“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap.” (ESV)

Explanation: Preparing the Way for the Messiah

  • God promised to send a messenger to prepare the way for the coming of the Lord.
  • This messenger would pave the way for the arrival of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
  • The Messiah’s coming would establish a new covenant between God and His people.
  • The arrival of the Messiah would bring both hope and judgment.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. How does knowing that God sent a messenger to prepare the way for Jesus impact your faith?
  2. What are some ways we can prepare our hearts and lives to receive Jesus?
  3. In what ways have you experienced God’s refining work in your life?
  4. Reflecting on the passage, how does the idea of God’s refining work make you feel? Why?

Bible Reading: Malachi 3:3-4

“He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the Lord. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.” (ESV)

Explanation: God’s Refining Work

  • The passage compares God’s refining work to that of a refiner purifying silver.
  • God desires to purify His people, making them righteous and pleasing to Him.
  • Just as silver and gold are refined through intense heat, God refines us through challenges and trials.
  • The result of God’s refining work is offerings of righteousness and restored worship.

Youth Group Discussion Questions:

  1. In what areas of your life do you feel God is refining you?
  2. How can we respond positively to the challenging times in our lives, knowing that God is refining us?
  3. How does the idea of being refined by God change your perspective on difficult circumstances?
  4. How can we encourage one another in our faith journeys, especially during times of refinement?

Youth Group Game: “Refiner’s Fire”

Materials needed: Small slips of paper, pens, a bowl, a timer.

Instructions:

  1. Distribute slips of paper and pens to each participant.
  2. Ask everyone to write down one challenging situation or trial they are currently facing or have faced in the past.
  3. Collect the slips of paper and place them in a bowl.
  4. Set a timer for a specific duration (e.g., 2 minutes).
  5. Start the timer and pass the bowl around. Each person takes turns picking a slip of paper and sharing the challenge written on it.
  6. After each sharing, the group can offer words of encouragement and support.
  7. Repeat until the timer runs out or all slips of paper have been shared.

This game encourages vulnerability and creates a safe space for teens to share their challenges and receive support from their peers.

Closing Prayer:

“Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word that guides and strengthens us. Help us to embrace the refining work you are doing in our lives, knowing that it leads to righteousness and a closer relationship with you. Give us the strength to face challenges and trials with faith and trust in your plan. May we encourage one another and grow together as a youth ministry. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Remember, as teenagers, our faith journey is just beginning. Let’s embrace the refining process God has for us and trust that He will shape us into vessels of honor, ready to fulfill His purpose in our lives.
